P.S. add a 1-2 sentence description for a chance to be quoted in the Breakout Companies of 2018 report by AngelList. ✌️
The acquirer is Bytedance, maker of the popular Chinese news app Toutiao, which recently raised money at a valuation of $20 billion. This is the same company that acquired Flipagram earlier this year.
Musical.ly has taken off with the teens and tweens, who use the app to make lip-syncing videos, and use Musical.ly's live streaming app, Live.ly, to hang out with friends virtually.
The Winners: The company's co-CEOs, employees, investors like Greylock and GGV, and @GaryVee – who has been loudly singing the company's praises for over a year.
The Losers: Facebook's M&A team will have a stern talking to for missing out on this.
Social is hard, and staying power is even harder to achieve. A billion dollar exit in three years is a wonderful achievement. Congrats to the founders of Musical.ly and the team. 🎉
P.S. Musical.ly cofounder and co-CEO Alex Zhu may have the best Product Hunt username there is. 😬
What happened to the Future? (Founders Fund asked, in their famous manifesto). Let us explain.
1. Uber is launching flying cars in 2020. You read that correctly. The company announced an on-demand fully electric vertical takeoff and landing flying car service. The Uber app will have an "UberAir" option to select that is straight out of The Jetsons. Watch the video.
2. All we got was 140 characters. In the 24 hours since Twitter's 280 expansion humanity proved it cannot be trusted with such innovations. Brands, people, social media managers everywhere, have shown their true character posting the longest tweets they could imagine. Luckily, a developer found the cure to the devastation. Download 140 extension.
3. The greatest innovation ever launched over the weekend. 🦄
The social network's new customer chat interface allows customers to talk directly with businesses on their websites using Messenger. These conversations are said to have the ability to continue across all devices using advanced syncing technology.
Former PayPal CEO and current Messenger Chief David Marcus shared the news on Twitter, calling it a "Big deal :)".
In response, Intercom CEO Eoghan McCabe took to Product Hunt, welcoming the new direct competition, saying:
"Heeeeey. CEO of Intercom here. All I’ll say for now is, it’s insane to see how big this space has become, and how fast it’s moving. The next few years are going to be fun and interesting!"
Along with Intercom, a leader in the space, Facebook will face stiff competition from Drift, Firechat, and other innovative new entrants.
Our thoughts: This isn’t Facebook’s first attempt at cracking the enterprise and a reminder that Zuckerberg and team have big ambitions (watch out, Elon).

Back in my (full time) writing days, I was perhaps atypical. I would basically never write a draft of anything. Instead, I would write and publish immediately. It was all about speed, speed, speed. These days, I’m a lot different. I wait. And wait. And wait.
I find myself increasingly using drafts, even beyond simply for long-form writing. Twitter. Instagram. Basically anything that will let you save a post to come back to later. A large part of this has to do with having a day job beyond writing and simply not having the time to devote. But the part I’ve grown to respect is actually getting something down and then revisiting it later with a “different” set of eyes.
These are the apps I use for writing:
For taking notes on the go, I generally use Bear. I love the design and simplicity of the app mixed with the ever-growing functionality. I do use Apple’s built-in Notes app for a few other things, mainly because there’s now a super quick short-cut to get to the app via Control Center in iOS 11 (not to mention the Apple Pencil shortcut for the iPad Pro).
When it comes time to sit down and write, I’ve been switching between Ulysses and iA Writer. Each has different pluses and minuses — Ulysses has many more features (and is a paid product), but recently I’ve got back to liking the more spartan look-and-feel of iA. I also like Byword, which is more similar to iA, and is featured on Product Hunt today. 😉
When it comes time to actually publish, Ulysses, iA, and Byword all work with Medium via an API to publish directly to that service in draft form. I’ll usually do any last edits there. I’ll also write directly in Medium’s very nice, simple editor if I’m replying to responses or writing shorter things. I’ve never actually lost a draft using Medium’s editor, but old habits die hard — I’ve lost too many in the ether of the CMSes of yesteryear :)

While a little embarrassing, this behavior didn't surprise us. Many people use Product Hunt to stay up-to-date and get inspired by what's happening in tech. Acquisitions, funding announcements, interesting stories, and anything from Elon Musk tends to attract interest and conversation among the community.
With these observations in mind, we're working on a new app that's different than anything else we've built in the past. It won't be limited to products. It might not have a kitty mascot. It will live quietly in the background, until something big happens. All signal, no clickbait. And yes, it will be available on iOS and Android.
We'd love your input and will be dog fooding Ship to keep everyone updated on our progress and gather feedback. If you want to be a part of the building process, subscribe now. We'll have a beta for you in the coming weeks. 😊
Greg Isenberg started his first company at age 13 and sold his previous one to StumbleUpon in 2013. He recently raised $1.85m from Greylock and others for his new app, after living on college campuses for the past year. Greg is here to share what he's learned with the community.
Getting a social app to go viral on college is the holy grail. Facebook, Tinder, Snapchat have used universities to propel themselves to billion dollar companies.
When we were the midst of launching Islands (Slack for College), I decided to haul my 28 year old a$$ back to college to go live among our users. It was the best decision I made. The insights were invaluable. Here’s a few:
1. Snap Map is quietly taking over college. “Where’s Sarah right now?”, “is Jimmy hanging with Michelle?” “Is the bar busy?” It’s the defacto FBI tool on campus. 🕵️
2. GroupMe is still one of the top 4 social apps on campus. Yes, you totally read that correctly, I repeat GroupMe (owned by Microsoft) is still an incredibly popular communication tool. Its uses range from class to greek life. 🗣
3. Snapchat stories is far from dead. What you put on your Instagram stories is very different then what you put on your Snapchat stories. Snap is still way more personal, Insta is way more curated. There is room for both. 👯
4. Other apps that have momentum right now: Bumble, Facetune (mostly women using it), Picolo (drinking game), Starbucks (50% of students using the app for payments over cash/debit). 🔥
These insights helped our company position who we are and who we want to be. At Islands, we’re reinventing how college students find each other, connect with communities, be in the know and build movements. We’re the social tissue of college.
Quick stats: There are over 4,000 participants across 124 countries, and over $250,000 in prizes up for grabs. This is a true testament to the global Product Hunt community. 🌏 😻
If you're looking for teammates: Mubs built a site that connects hackers from around the world. Join the official hackathon Facebook Group which has over 900 members/potential teammates as of now.
If you're looking for an idea: there's an API for everything, and take a look at the thread of most requested side projects (and feel free to add your own ideas!)
Fun fact: More than 50% of participants said they want to build something for social good when they signed up. 🙏

Potential hackathon ideas to work on:
📞 On-demand empathy. When feeling down, depressed, or lonely press a button and receive a call from a kind human.
🤖 A bot to diversify your Twitter following. A bot that intros two people with different backgrounds (geo, demo, etc.) that share interests.
💰 Amazon Dash Buttons for charities. A physical button that donates $5 to select charities (e.g. @charitywater) when pressed.
✏️ Genius for crypto. Community-powered whitepaper annotations and analysis for upcoming ICOs.
💦 Soylent for sparkling water. Open sourced bubbly beverages to compete with LaCroix.
Big thanks to AWS, Stripe, Slack, Dribbble, Girls in Tech, Indie Hackers, Google Assistant, Glitch, and TechCrunch for being a part of this. 🙌
If you'd rather stay focused we respect you decision. Do not download the Scary Camera Effects app that transforms your photos into frightening horror movie scenes. Do install the Scary Productive Chrome extension that will make you “sh*t your pants” whenever you (or your office neighbor 😉) visits a site to procrastinate.
P.S. If you need any last minute costume ideas Famous Outfits will have you looking like your favorite celebrity (affordably) and these printable Halloween masks are pretty neat. 🎭
