@samharrisofficial What sets the Waking Up Course apart from the other meditation apps out there? You mentioned it will be Vipassana, but in your book you say you prefer Dzogchen.
Sam Harris
@fusioncompound See above. I'm presenting mindfulness from a Dzogchen perspective.
Kenny Sabarese
@samharrisofficial When you talk about Dzogchen in the Waking Up book you mention the goal being the path. I just read the Advaita Vedanta master Jean Klein's book "I Am" and he mentions that striving for anything fuels the ego and prevents one from attaining enlightenment. These two ideas seem to conflict with each other so I'm curious to hear your input.
Sam Harris
@fusioncompound This can seem paradoxical, but it ultimately isn't. Unraveling the seeming paradox will be one of the central goals of the course. It is definitely possible to practice mindfulness from a goal-oriented perspective that traps you. I did that for several years.

@samharrisofficial THANK YOU! I can't wait to hear more about this!

Hey Sam: Love the app so far. FYI - all of your responses are showing up as tweets...
Sam Harris
@logan_fiorella That might count as the worst thing I've ever done... !

Sam, you and the team pulled off something truly intuitive and beautiful. I started my Day after a run in Battersea Park this morning and it set the tone for a good day. Long may they continue. I’ve decided to chronicle my experience of the app in Medium...w/o divulging content of the course. I’ve waited a long time. Can’t believe 3 yrs. i thought it was iver 1. Thanks again Sam. Especially for the free membership. The value exceeds my support but i intend to increase it now. I’m grateful.

@samharrisofficial How are the more advanced courses different from the intro? I'm familiar with apps for beginners, but I'm curious as to how more seasoned mediators would use an app as well.
Sam Harris
@musicmaing The purpose of the app is to first introduce the practice of mindfulness (so it's good for beginners), and to then get users to realize that consciousness is already free of this thing we call "I." So if your mindfulness isn't yet synonymous with recognizing the illusoriness of the self in each moment, you'll probably find it useful.

After listening to your discussions regarding the fact that we instriniscally feel “we” exist at a point just behind our eyes, I have during my meditation tried to practice moving this perceived point of existence down into my body and away from the head completely as an attempt to break away from the constraints this perception deals us. In practice, it seems achievable to some degree, but after practice ends, it’s straight back behind the eyes again.... have you any tips for maintaining this practice during everyday life and would you in fact even consider it a useful thing to do in the pursuit of moving towards “no self”? Love the app... thanks for what you do.
Sam Harris
@neiltibbetts Yes, the point of the app is to keep covering this terrain—not just in formal meditations sessions, but out in the world.

@samharrisofficial thanks for taking the time to reply Sam. Look forward to exploring this more. Supporting this and the podcast is money very well spent.

Hey Sam, in what direction are you planning to take the content? It came up during your conversations with Peterson that there's a certain "void" we feel when we shed ourselves from any dogmatic principles and try to structure our lives from first principles. I can't help but noticing that your content fills it? Or it at least changes your perception of the void, doesn't it (?) 🤔

How will the app evolve? What other features will we see on it in the future?
Sam Harris
@eugeniot We have several ideas. My job will be to produce the audio content. But we're eager to continue developing it.

@samharrisofficial congrats on launching! I could have sworn you’ve only been talking about this for 1188 days ;) Downloaded and trying now. I love headspace but have hit a bit of a plateau after 3+ years of use so am excited to try something different.
Sam Harris
@guesto This will be different, and more directed. In later meditations, I'm really trying to get you to realize something—e.g. about the illusoriness of the self—right then and there. We'll see if it works!
Chris Guest
@samharrisofficial Sounds great, can't wait!
