Categories on Product Hunt

You might have noticed we added "categories" today. Over time, "topics" became more like keywords rather than useful for goal-directed searches within specific product verticals (which is most PH searches). Categories will help us improve search and browsing, as well as eventually a lot of other downstream features. Ex. Zoom *is* video conferencing software, not "tech, productivity, video, SDK, meetings" Categories are what your product is or what problem it solves. Topics might include general industries, specific features, technologies, or keywords. At the moment, categories are meant to supplement topics. Topics will still exist, although you can think of them more as ‘tags’ than a primary taxonomy. We built out the a lot of this from scratch, so please suggest verticals we're missing – if your product isn't categorized yet you can do so by editing your hub page. Lmk if you have any questions!

I like it, problem- solution thinking. Crucial mindset for project builder
Maybe now I can actually find that email client while avoiding accidental video conferences. Kudos, PH team 🙌

love this evolution on Product Hunt. a shift from 'what it is' to 'what it does'. from identity to impact. reminds us of the value of perspective, doesn't it? a fresh lens often reveals unseen contours, missed paths. and yet, let's not forget. while categories guide us, they also confine. impose borders. segment. it's up to us, the community, to transcend these artificial constructs. to see beyond. to connect, relate, combine. that's where magic happens, right? in the intersections. the overlaps. the unexpected alignments. excited for this journey. let's see where these new paths lead us.

Haven't mentioned it at once, so thanks for this note! That is really helpful, like the idea! Why there is a limit of 3 categories only?

@oxana_ivanova there’s very few products that really need more than that to describe their core functionality. Also, I’m the past some folks have a tendency to try and growth hack PH by using a bunch of irrelevant/generic topics.

@alec_afforai Checked your launch and supported! Good luck! 🙌 And thank you for your support as well!

@kylefrost that make sense. Never understand why people hacking this way, it's not the place where they can find their target audience

Awesome! I am not sure if it is just me but I tried adding the categories and the scroller was not working properly @kylefrost. I was trying to scroll down and the option to choose was removed. It would be good if you could have a look to see if it's not a bug.
