Sometimes a “pivot” isn’t what you think

A lot of us think pivoting means tearing everything down and starting over or taking a hard left turn and never looking back…

For us, we’ve learned that a “pivot” was actually just a shift toward what we were actually building the whole time.

Sometimes the “pivot” is:

  • How you talk about what you’re building

  • How you position your solution in the market

  • How you think about the company itself

What’s interesting is that our product stayed the same but the way we framed it finally clicked.

Suddenly the value was obvious, the conversations were easier, and users “got it” faster.

Sometimes a pivot comes from reframing, not rebuilding.

Curious if anyone else has experienced a similar “pivot”?

The same happened to me. When I first framed my idea, people thought of it as a punishment. I quickly realised I needed to reframe, and when I presented the idea again, but with better wording, it got me positive responses.

We shifted from framing the input (“language”) to framing the output (“learning”). Focusing on the expected outcome helped users better understand what value they would gain from using our product!

Pivoting for me sometimes means that I end up with some conclusion/finding that helped me to significantly grow something. :)

Yeah, i agree. I've realized before that pivoting can just mean reframing, same product but different story, totally different result.

Whenever I hear the word pivot it reminds me of two rooms. The engine room and the showroom. First I check the engine. Do users still do the same two actions every day. If yes the engine is fine. Then I fix the showroom. Clear sign. Short demo. One simple promise in the buyer’s words... Most pivots are not new roads. They are cleaner rooms.

Love this analogy. Sometimes the showroom just needs to be cleaned!
