I turned the MacBook notch into a Dynamic Island

Every MacBook since 2021 has a notch, and on macOS it does absolutely nothing. On iPhone, the same cutout became the most useful strip on the screen.

That gap bothered me, so I built Pulse Island, a native macOS app that turns the notch into a live, interactive island.

Pulse 1.0 lands this weekend 🎉

First, the part that matters most: Thank You.

When I launched Pulse here, genuinely didn't know it would make it #10 globally on Product Hunt.

You downloaded it, broke it, told me exactly what felt right and what needed work, and sent me bug reports at 2am. Every single one of those shaped the app.

Pulse 1.2 is out: your reminders, your CI, and music from any app, all in the MacBook notch

Hey folks,

I mdae Pulse, a small Mac app that turns the MacBook notch into something useful: now playing, meeting controls, clipboard, weather, focus timer, AirDrop shelf, battery, system stats. It lives in the dead pixels you already paid for.

1.2 shipped this week, and it is the first release where I did almost no deciding. I read the emails, counted what people kept asking for, and built those three things.

My app asked for money before it showed new users anything. Not any more.

From the very first build, opening Pulse asked for a licence key before it would do anything at all. No demo, no trial, nothing for new users. My reasoning felt principled at the time: a demo is a hole in the thing that asks for money, and I did not want a half version of the app floating around being judged.

What actually happened is that new people downloaded the DMG, opened it, met a wall, and closed it. I was asking strangers to pay for something they had never once seen running on their own Mac. The notch is a personal piece of screen. Nobody can tell from a screenshot whether they want something living in it.

I taught the MacBook notch to watch your AI tools!

Hey folks,

I made Pulse Island, a macOS app that turns the notch into a Dynamic Island. Yesterday I shipped 1.1.1 and it grew the feature I have wanted since day one, so I thought I would share how it turned out.

Hey folks,

When I launched Pulse, the pitch was simple: the notch should do something. Today I shipped 1.1, biggest update yet, and it turns the island into a place you can put things and a remote for your meetings.
