We tracked 500 Product Hunt launches. Here is what the top 10% did differently.
I spent the last two months analyzing Product Hunt launches.
Not the upvotes. The patterns behind them.
Here is what the data says.
The first hour is not the most important hour.
The top 10% did not have more upvotes in the first hour. They had more comments in the first hour. Comments signal engagement. Upvotes signal approval. Engagement carries more weight.
They built momentum before launch.
Companies with pre-existing audiences are 3-5x more likely to reach top-5 positions. Product Hunt does not create momentum. It amplifies momentum. If you do not have momentum before launch, you will not have it after launch.
They wrote something worth reading in the comments.
The top 10% of launches had founders who replied to every comment within 4 hours. Not generic "thanks for the support" replies. Actual responses that engaged with the feedback. The comment section is where undecided voters decide.
They used Product Hunt before they launched.
Active participation on Product Hunt before launch is a strong signal of good launch performance. The platform favors makers who are part of the community, not just people who show up on launch day.
They launched on a Tuesday or Wednesday.
Friday launches average lower engagement. The Product Hunt team is less active. The community is distracted. Tuesday and Wednesday are the highest performing days.
What I am curious about.
What is the biggest surprise you have encountered when launching on Product Hunt? And did you track any of these patterns?

Thank you for sharing this. This is gold because I am launching Capsule tomorrow. We have been working hard on the product and tried our best to do all the best practices for PH. Let's see how it goes.
Really interesting data, thanks for sharing!
If Product Hunt amplifies existing momentum rather than creating it, what does that mean for teams launching their very first product with no audience at all?
How do you build that momentum from scratch when you have nothing yet to show and no community around you?
Would be happy to have your opinion
I expected early upvotes to matter most, but the real lift came from people asking questions. Conversations kept bringing new visitors back to the page.
here to learn. ✌️

Interesting findings. The comments point doesn't surprise me too much. From my own experience, comments are where the real interaction happens. Upvotes help with ranking, but comments create feedback.
I also strongly agree with the momentum point.A lot of people treat Product Hunt as the start of marketing, but I think it's more of an initial boost. The more support and awareness you build before launch day, the better the results tend to be.
