Commons - Private Discord for your team to collaborate

byβ€’
Commons is a voice-first communication platform that recreates an office-like environment. It’s super easy to use: Login with Slack. Tap to talk. See the team on 1 screen. Record, transcribe, and assign action items.

Connection and quick interactions is a huge problem for teams as we go more and more remote. Really excited to see Commons take a swing at this!

@mloco Thank you! It was sooooo helpful to get your early feedback on our previous versions! πŸ™πŸ™

Patrick Burns
@saidyanik haha great to hear! Can you share more? Don't think we've heard that one before πŸ˜‚

Congratulations on creating and launching a useful and much needed product to ease the burden of remote collaboration!

My co-founder and I have been testing commons for a few weeks and it's been awesome. It gives us a really nice way to drop into rooms and have a great place talk about a project or work together on notes.
Patrick Burns
@joeblau heck yea! We think it's so powerful to be able to do 'drop into rooms' as you say, and get some of the serendipity back in the work environment 🎼

Interesting and practicle product. Why pairing with Slack instead of any other platform though? (simple curiosity)
Patrick Burns
@rubenwolff Great Q! Lots of teams use Slack throughout the day, so we wanted to make it as seamless as possible to use Commons alongside Slack--especially given the quantity of tools that we all use these days. That said, we will have lots of integrations with other products. Any in particular that you'd like?
Ruben Wolff
@pattyjburns Thanks for the reply! My team and I use Discord, we like the concept of channels people can join to speak openly, but it doesn't provide as many possibilities as Commons seems to do
Patrick Burns
@rubenwolff totally. We love Discord but we believe this use case requires a purpose built product for work. A good example of how this manifests in the UX is the walkie-talkie style mic - we made this decision very intentionally. While Discord has hot keys, it's harder for them to prioritize b/c the keyboard is used for gaming.

Nice re-open of Clubhouse format!
Patrick Burns
@nataliekarakina Haha, there are actually few similarities with Clubhouse the product, but the key ones have an impact: live audio as a default format and rooms you can drop in + out of. Clubhouse helped to validate that live audio could be as natural as live video.

@pattyjburns and team, what kind of feedback/requests did you get from users that inspired Commons?
Patrick Burns
@margarettejung Great Q. When doing research, we kept hearing from people that every time they needed to interact with teammates on more complex topics or questions, the default is to schedule a meeting. But that means more meetings -- and often a quick chat is all you need. This is exactly how it works in the real world. This was a major insight that led us here!

I’ve been missing casual conversations with my peers β€” this is such a great idea!
Patrick Burns
@jennifermarie thank you! Yes, we believe that "small talk is big talk" in the workplace. Culture development, like friendship development, requires lots of spontaneous interactions over a long period of time. These conversations also help drive creativity.
