Nothing is for free...

@mosrrrr exactly my thoughts. Google wants to index all your photos - world wide. I expect some new privacy policy changes to come down the pipeline soon.

Convenience in exchange for privacy, eh? Well, I'm pretty sure Google's got evidence of all my naughty deads by now anyways. @mkhoury @mosrrrr

Glad they pulled this out of g+

I feel lost. Google+, Picasa, Google drive/docs, and now Google photos. I don't know where my photos uploaded by Picasa are, and I don't know where the photos in Google photos are from...
Ryan Merket
I already do this with Dropbox. Not sure why I would switch at this point.
Eddie Tomalin
@merket it'll make me feel like Google owns me even more
Ian Mikutel
@merket Google can innovate on data mining your photos faster than Dropbox can and essentially create a more useful product in the process.
Miles Matthias
@merket my thought exactly.
Eric Metelka
@merket I'm currently using Carousel and Dropbox too. But they've changed Carousel where it's really hard to scroll back and find photos from the past. Also the auto story collections and search in Google are so good. I think it's worth it.

Does Google Photos auto detect for duplicates and upload them?
bormahine
@thesameerk Yes. It does.

Google Photos will be launching later today (more details here). Until then, here are some dancing babies.

@rrhoover I can only imagine what it's like to share an office with you! Giffy fridays anyone?

This is literally something that I've been waiting on for quite some time now. Photos is by far the most useful photo storage I've ever used. Being able to type in a query and for it to find an image you were looking for is super useful, and mind blowing at the same time.
Dharmesh Shah
@draganbabic I'm with you. The organization and search are what make this so useful. It's what I've been waiting for. Now, if they just add a way to better "train" the system (with tags) over time, that would be super cool.

did they forget to include a feature that isolates screenshots?
Ouriel Ohayon
@davidsven @ourielohayon i don t have a problem they keep the screenshots and make them searchable (neat feature) but just a way to separate those from the rest. it amazes that both Apple and Google who have most footprint in digital pictures have still not figured that out!

I've used Carbonite to backup my photos for years. For about $60/year, I get peace of mind. I'll give Google Photos a try but privacy is definitely a concern for me.
Matthew Berman
And now I see why I'll stick with Carbonite: "Free (reduced size) photo storage"
Michael Sitver
What's up with limiting it to 16mp photos? Leaving DSLR freaks out :( I'll stick to Flickr until I can store my photos uncompressed.
Eric Metelka
@msitver they can, you just have to pay for storage ($10 for 1 TB). In fact, if you dig into their FAQ, they suggest just that - buy space for DSLR. Use the free tier for mobile photos.
Michael Sitver
@eric3000 @msitver Fair enough. I didn't know that. Still, Flickr gives me 1 TB for free. You'd think Google, with their massive storage infrastructure, could do the same.
