going to apply to Y Combinator alone at 17, has anyone done this without a co-founder?
by•
first of all i cant believe i have come this far to even think about applying to YC. big move for me.
built my startup from the ground up alone. worked day and night to get here.
but i've studied YC interviews and nearly every funded startup has either a team or minimum 2 to 3 people.
I feel like doing it alone makes me stand out. that's what they look for. but I've never seen anyone get through solo.
has anyone here applied to YC alone? did it hurt your chances?

Honestly, I think applying solo at 17 already shows confidence. If I were in your position, I’d focus heavily on traction, product demos, and why I uniquely understand the problem I’m solving
I have no experience applying to YC but just wanted to say building something from the ground up at 17 and even thinking about applying takes a lot of courage. Wishing you the best with it.
Ironically, I'm in a similar situation.
I applied to YC summer 2026 a few days ago under Vector - Actionable Insight for Everyone. I'm 15 y/o and I applied solo. From what I can tell, applying solo isn't ideal but not an automatic denial. Your founder video and demo video matter much more than applying with a co-founder, but it's also important to say you're open to a co-founder.
@matthew_goley 15 years old to apply to YC that's impressive i just started at that age by 17 you will be ahead
there was a form on redit i read where it said 11% of what they have accepted are solo founders gonna apply next month just need to get more data
@itslouie If your applying to Summer 2026, I wouldn't wait too long. Applying is also quick and you can reuse most of an application for whenever you apply next.
See you in SF this summer

It's refreshing to see people applying early.
I have seen some solo founders during my YC batch, even if it's not the norm.
With AI, I don't know the statistics, but it feels like there is more people building solo in general.
I believe the most important thing is to show that you can build something, whether you are alone or with a team.
