Fluent - Learn a new language by browsing the web

by
Fluent automatically translates words on websites so you can learn a language while browsing the web. You never have to set aside extra time just to study. You can now learn from content that you're already interested in.

Incredible product, flawless UI - if this is your first version, I cannot wait to see what you have in store for future versions. Great job guys!!

@steventey Thanks Steven, the team is so pumped to hear this!! Please let me know if you think we can make anything better :)

Very simple but useful at the same time. I like the idea of the Guess feature a lot 🙂
Ara Ghougassian
@tirskih_elisaveta thank you! The idea is instead of testing being a formal thing you do at a specific time, why don't we just slip it in casually throughout your day. It helps you actually remember the vocab you learn and when you get a word right it honestly feels so good! Once you try it I'd love your personal feedback and if you think there's any way we can make it better :)

Awesome product... really fun way to learn French! I feel like I'm well on my way to owning a chateau in the French countryside. :)
Ara Ghougassian
@stevenmoseley You're only a few words away from the Chateau Steven, keep learning :)
Usama Khalid
Gonna try it out.

@usama_khalid happy to have you on team Fluent, let me know how your experience is like :)

This looks swell, too bad is only for Chrome.
Ara Ghougassian
@youcedom Did you want it on Firefox or Safari?
Youce
@ara_ghougassian1 A Firefox extension would be fantastic! If you ever end up launching it, feel free to add me to the beta testers.
Ara Ghougassian
@youcedom Vote here so I can update you directly for Firefox! (we're planning for it asap) https://feedback.usefluent.co/fe...

I've been using this for a month now and I love the idea of passively learning a language while browsing the web. Excited to see this product evolve!
Ara Ghougassian
@siddharth87 Great having you onboard!! :)

Quite a lot of fun, and great way to inject learning into the day without, say, a nagging green modern theropod getting involved. I did have a bit of trouble on the very first page I tried (BBC News homepage, where words were selected and highlighted, but I could not interact with them) but has otherwise "played nicely". One consideration for the density slider - perhaps have it seize on larger continuous phrases, not just additional discrete words? All in all, 9/10, would click through scary "Let this thing read and modify everything I do on the web" Chrome extensions permissions dialog again. :)

@murchadh Thanks so much for your review and feedback! We'll tinkering on how to make phrases work the best. Would you be looking for things like adjective-noun combinations like "the big house" or "a tall bear" ?
Muꞃċaꝺ̇ Mac Neaċꝺainn
@ara_ghougassian1 Yes, adjective+noun or adverb+verb combos would of course be nice, but perhaps more useful (and easier/less error-prone to implement?) would be single lexical items that happen to be made up of multiple words. Fluent will happily swap out a single English word for a string of several in French that have the same meaning, but I don't think I've seen it do the reverse. A perfect example from an article I was just reading - the article contained the term "food courts", and Fluent translated "courts" for me ("tribunaux"). And that's fine, though I know the words for "food" and "court". (I had to consult a dictionary to discover "foire alimentaire" and similar. But hey - Fluent still inspired me to do so!)

@ara_ghougassian1 @murchadh I'm glad you brought this up, it's one of the main things we're working on right now is both common phrases and smart word combinations that we can hard code. That and verb conjugation.

I hate learning new languages just like I hate going to the gym but this product has really made learning a new language feel like I am playing my favourite sport! I highly highly recommend it!!!
Ara Ghougassian
@thomas_maze Love that analogy! Most people love the feeling they get AFTER going to the gym, getting there is the hard part. Same thing with language learning, the friction to start practicing sucks every day, but with Fluent we get rid of that so we get right to the good stuff asap :)
Nicolas „Niq“ Bernadowitsch
Looks promising :) Are you planning to launch on Firefox too? Thanks ?makers
Gavin Dove
@cosniq Firefox coming soon! I'll shoot you a message when it's out :)
