Reviewers are split on SafetyWing. Many praise the easy signup, flexible monthly coverage while already abroad, clear dashboard, responsive chat support, and in several cases very fast reimbursements or direct hospital payment. But the strongest negative pattern is claims: multiple users describe long delays, repeated document requests, vague denials, difficult appeals, and disputes over pre-existing conditions or renewals that reset coverage. What's great

I used SafetyWing believing I was purchasing peace of mind as an international traveler. What I experienced instead was a masterclass in delay tactics, contradictory information, and procedural exhaustion.

I was hospitalized with severe neurological and urological symptoms, underwent multiple exams, specialist evaluations, invasive procedures, and remained under active medical care for days. Despite this, SafetyWing repeatedly requested documents that had already been submitted multiple times, including medical reports, discharge summaries, itemized invoices, prescriptions, and receipts.

At one point, they rejected coverage for my hospitalization by linking it to a previously denied claim… that had only been denied because of a lumbar support belt classified as an “orthopedic device.” Not because the medical condition itself wasn’t covered.

Even after providing itemized invoices in detail, they continued claiming the hospital had only sent a “quotation,” apparently because the invoice was titled “Pré-facture” in French, despite containing every treatment, procedure, physician fee, and hospitalization cost line by line.

Meanwhile, I was hospitalized, being pressured by the hospital administration for payment, while my insurer continuously moved the goalposts.

This was not an insurance experience. It was administrative obstruction disguised as customer support.

If your business model depends on customers becoming too sick, too overwhelmed, or too financially cornered to keep fighting for reimbursement, then what you are offering is not protection. It is performance theater wearing the costume of insurance.

I followed the instructions carefully regarding the required documents, submitted everything with a clear explanation of my claim, and was genuinely surprised when it got approved on the same day. Reimbursement also arrived within just a few business days.

I purchased a Nomad Insurance policy from SafetyWing (underwritten by Tokio Marine HCC) while traveling in Europe. I submitted a legitimate claim for a simple medical expense (100 EUR), including all required documents: medical report, prescription, invoice, receipt, and my insurance card. Despite following all instructions and sending everything multiple times, the company kept asking for more clarification and delayed the process for months. In the end, they refused the refund, giving vague explanations and requesting documents that had already been provided. Customer service was unhelpful, responses were slow and generic, and it feels like they are simply avoiding reimbursement. They only respond publicly when you leave negative reviews—I posted a complaint on Trustpilot, and they immediately asked me to contact them again. I followed up as requested but once again received no reply. It seems they just want to appear responsive in public while continuing to ignore you behind the scenes. I do not recommend this insurance provider. It’s cheap but when you actually need it, they do not deliver.

I purchased SafetyWing because I was already traveling and my former insurance company wouldn't accept an extension. Most other insurance companies that offer travel insurance services do not allow you to purchase your policy if you are already abroad. Even some put a 14 day hold of claims period, in which if something happens, you are most likely to not get coverage. SafetyWing, through their Nomad Insurance product, offered me protection since day 1 at 00:00 from the date of purchase (the first day of my trip extension). I paid a reasonable amount for a 43 day trip and two weeks later I continued my trip from Spain (Barcelona) to Indonesia (Bali). Once arriving in Bali, I enjoyed the island for a night and the next night was admitted at an urgent care clinic 10 minutes away from my hotel. The total bill for that emergency visit was less than USD 1,000.-, I paid and kept medical records and the receipt for further claiming purposes. 14 days passed and I enjoyed many beaches and destinations within the Island. The day of my trip back to Barcelona I got "Bali Belly" (travelers Gastrointestinal Infection/Disease), and I was not able to board my flights. After attending BIMC Kuta Hospital for an emergency visit, they recommended 3/4 day in hospitalization. I paid for a deposit that the Hospital refunded me when they got the GOP (Guarantee of Payment) from the Insurance. After that all costs where covered by SafetyWing. While returning from Indonesia to Spain on the plain and free of diseases, I was able to successfully place six claims for all expenses incurred (2 emergency visits, 2 follow ups and 2 out of pocket expenses claims). These claims were submitted on a Friday, by Monday, I already had the money DEPOSITED into my account (payment was a US domestic ACH). Overall I recommended SafetyWing's Nomad Insurance product to all my friends abroad and at home, I wish that the experience continues to be this good in the future as I will continue purchasing this insurance product when I travel abroad.

It’s my first year with them and it’s been a good experience overall. The chat feature has been very useful for me to understand the system or ask questions. They’ve been supporting in my needs and haven’t had any issue with reimbursement. The dashboard is easy to use. Placing claims has also been smooth. Only problem I had was that I couldn’t get through with anyone on the emergency line during an emergency I had with my child and had to take him to ER anyways without a reply. I left an email explaining the situation before going to ER and they were understanding and did reimburse the expenses that one time because it was an emergency even though it went over the limit they place. I’m still navigating the preapproval feature.

Honestly, the service of SafetyWing has decayed a lot in the past few months. I've been using SafetyWing for more than a year now and in the beginning I had nothing bad to say, however in the past few months there's been several issues. They advertised in the beginning of the year that claims would be reviewed and reimbursed faster (7 days or less) and if I can be honest it was even faster than that, but in the last month or two they changed this for 10 - 15 days (and it's really 10 - 15 BUSINESS days) for someone that made a whole meeting about the things they were changing for best and then some months later they just changed it back, speaks a lot. 2 months ago I've made a claim for a specialised doctor that despite taking some days to be reimbursed it was reimbursed, but for my surprise, I've made a 2nd doctor appointment (exactly the same appointment as before) and this one came rejected with an explanation that even makes any sense (the idea that gives me was that the person who reviewed this claim didn't had any idea what that specialised doctor was and it didn't take some time to search it). After this, I've sent an e-mail to safetywing, they replied that I needed to make an appeal to their other e-mail and it would take 5 business days to reply, which I did on the last 15th May, 12 days have passed and until this day I didn't receive any reply, not even saying that my case was being analysed. I've spoke with someone on safetywing website but even them didn't know anything and the only information they gave me was that "I needed to wait they will eventually get back to you", when asked about an e-mail to make a proper complaint they said they didn't had it. So, if you have any problems with this company rest assured that you don't have a way to complaint and they will not solve the issued they made for themselves. I have already sent 2 more emails to their appeals e-mail but all of them without a reply - I feel that this company is starting to be a scam as they don't reply to customers, reject all claims without a proper explanation and when we make an appeal they just ignore.

I was hospitalised in Vientiane, Laos, due to an emergency that occured as a result of a fall. Instead of reimbursing the hospital bill, I was asked to request for a discount from the hospital which is unheard-of in this part of the world. They were also asking numerous question that suggest that they were doubtful of my injury despite the operation and doctor's notes that were done. It was abhorently unprofessional the way my case was handled, they did not provide me with any reimbursement despite the agonising back and forth emails and calls. Would not recommend it. Abhorrently disgusting!

A scam. Most of the positive reviews here are from people who never had to claim the policy (or bot accounts possibly, see how they all have the same writing style) The sign up process is butter smooth (that should have given me a clue in the first place), but once you need to use the policy they'll exploit anything they can to avoid paying, even if it's unrelated. I had to be taken urgently into a hospital for 4 days, and they exploited some prior minor cold symptoms to claim "pre-existence". They won't even elaborate on why, nor you'll get to discuss it, you'll simply get an email with "pre-existing conditions are not covered" They even have a section called "Emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury" that states that "emergency treatment of a pre-existing illness or injury is covered". Forget about that, it doesn't matter Luckily I had another, real and serious insurance, that did cover everything, backing up my point

I have had a safety wing for three months now and I love it. It was incredibly easy to submit a claim through the website; also the pre-authorization for an MRI at the hospital was approved within one day! One of the things I tell people most is how impressed I am with the responsive customer service. The chat function is extremely useful especially for someone who works in multiple time zones and I don't like sitting on the phone, and also going through all the prompts. The chats are continuous and saved and also sent through email, so you can respond at your leisure (the reps don't close out your conversation just because you left the web-chat). I was very impressed with the chat-email seamless integration and how helpful the Reps are (Shout out to Kara!). Also, for the product itself - the coverage is very sufficient! I am impressed enough to where I got 2 other friends to sign up as well (no incentives) because it's hard to find great health insurance for digital nomads!

They helped me with my insurance claim while in Japan!" It was very easy enrolling and I was able to set a specific time when I needed the travel insurance which was awesome. I was like every person searching online finding a "travel insurance" for my family of 4 and took a chance on using it on our trip to SouthEast Asia & Australia as well as Japan. Most definitely the customer service team was prompt in communicating with me when I needed help and questions and I'm glad I used this when my daughter ended up in a hospital overseas! Thank you safety wing !!
