Once you have many files or large files, it takes FOREVER TO LOAD
Export can be a pain with all the layers - always have to allocate some time to review and export again and again in case we missed an icon or a number or sth.
Offline mode is not the best - not ideal for folks who work on the go

vs Alternatives

Imo Figma is still the best design / prototype product out there. The new AI features make it even stronger. Figma Make and Figma MCP are worth exploring.

We used it not only for product design, but also to collaborate closely between design and frontend — from wireframes to pixel-perfect implementation. It kept everyone aligned, fast, and creative. We couldn’t imagine launching without it! ✅ Tip: Use components and auto layout early — they made our design system scalable as we rapidly iterated. 🔁 Alternatives considered: We briefly considered Sketch + Zeplin, and Penpot — but nothing came close to Figma’s multiplayer design experience and real-time dev handoff.

Additionally, more advanced version control, clearer change tracking, and better permission granularity would help teams manage large-scale design systems more effectively.

Figma is one of the best tools for turning product ideas into something the whole team can actually understand.

What I like most is the collaboration layer. Designers, developers, founders, and product people can all look at the same flow, comment on details, and align before implementation starts.

For me, Figma is especially useful for landing pages, product flows, UI exploration, and developer handoff. It reduces a lot of back-and-forth because the visual decisions, spacing, components, and states are easier to discuss in one place.

It is not just a design tool. It becomes a shared product workspace when the team uses it well.

Figma can slow down when files become too large or messy.

The product is powerful, but teams still need good file hygiene: clear pages, components, naming, design systems, and cleanup. Without that, even a great Figma file can become hard for developers to follow.

Developer handoff has improved a lot, but there is still room to make specs, responsive behavior, and edge states easier to understand.

Figma sits at the heart of everything we build. We run a web performance agency, and for us a design file is not a picture, it is a spec. Component libraries, spacing scales, responsive states and exact asset dimensions are all defined in Figma before a line of code is written, so developers implement what was actually intended instead of interpreting a flat mockup. That alone removes a whole class of rework.

The collaboration layer is what makes it indispensable rather than merely convenient. UX reviews happen straight in the file: a comment pinned to the exact element being discussed, in context, resolved once it is handled. It has replaced entire rounds of annotated screenshots and email threads with clients. Designers, developers and the client all work from the same source of truth, with nothing to install and no confusion about which file is the current one.

Dev Mode and the inspect panel make handoff fast, and the plugin ecosystem covers most of the remaining gaps. It is the one tool in our stack that nobody ever questions.

vs Alternatives

Adobe XD

Adobe XD was the main alternative on the table, and the comparison settles itself now. It always felt like a desktop-era tool with collaboration bolted on afterwards: file-based thinking, sharing as an export step rather than a default, and a plugin scene that never reached critical mass. We come across it less and less on projects, and nobody misses it.

Figma won on the thing that matters most to how we work: everything lives in the browser, so a client, a designer and a developer can be in the same file at the same time, with no install and no licence juggling. Add design systems that actually hold up across projects and a handoff developers trust, and there was never much of a debate.

After 10+ years in product design, Figma remains the gold standard. The collaboration features have transformed how I work with remote teams across 200+ shipped products. The plugin ecosystem is unmatched—would love to see better version control for enterprise teams. Essential tool for any serious designer.

What needs improvement

Better version control and branching features for enterprise teams would be fantastic. Also, improved performance when handling very large files with hundreds of frames.

vs Alternatives

I evaluated Sketch, Adobe XD, and InVision before committing to Figma. What made Figma the clear winner: (1) Browser-based means zero friction for client collaboration, (2) Real-time multiplayer editing that actually works at scale, (3) The plugin ecosystem is unmatched, (4) Auto-layout and components are more powerful than competitors, (5) Cross-platform support means my team on Windows and Mac work seamlessly together. After 10 years in the industry and 200+ shipped products, Figma is the only tool I recommend without hesitation.

What needs improvement

Currently using Figma to design SAFYRO (our hybrid PM platform launching Spring 2026). The component system and auto-layout are essential for maintaining consistency across complex UI - especially when designing both Gantt chart and Kanban board views.

The collaboration features are brilliant for async design review with our distributed team. Real-time cursors might seem like a small thing, but they completely change how we iterate.

Only wish: Better support for data-heavy table/grid components. Designing PM interfaces with lots of structured data can get tricky. But overall, can't imagine building without Figma anymore 🎨

When I actually need to design something rather than slap it together, this is where I go. Running in the browser, real-time, with a free tier generous enough for a solo maker — I mostly use it to mock a UI before I build it, and compositing real screenshots into marketing frames.
