Cursor has become an essential part of my development workflow. The AI-assisted coding experience is fast, intuitive, and makes it much easier to work with existing codebases. The context awareness and code generation are especially useful, and the overall integration with VS Code makes the transition very smooth.
The pricing and usage limits are the biggest downside for me. The usage limit can be reached surprisingly quickly, especially during intensive development sessions. I think the product would be much more valuable with more generous usage limits or better pricing options for users who rely on Cursor every day.
I considered other AI coding tools, but Cursor felt like the most natural fit for my existing development workflow. Its IDE integration, context awareness, and overall coding experience made it easier for me to stick with Cursor.
Cursor is fantastic because it deeply integrates AI into the core coding workflow rather than treating it as an external tool. It understands project context, code structure, and developer intent, enabling accurate code generation, refactoring, and navigation directly inside the editor. By significantly reducing context switching and accelerating problem-solving, Cursor helps developers write, understand, and iterate on code faster and with greater confidence.
While Cursor is highly powerful, there are areas for improvement. In large or complex codebases, context selection can sometimes be imprecise, leading to less relevant suggestions. More transparent control over which files and symbols the AI is using would help developers better guide the model. Additionally, performance optimization for long-running sessions and clearer feedback when the AI’s confidence is low would further improve trust and usability.
I chose Cursor because it integrates AI directly into the editor in a way that is deeply context-aware and practical for real-world development. Unlike standalone AI tools, Cursor understands the structure of the codebase and supports tasks like refactoring, debugging, and reasoning across files. This makes it a natural extension of the development workflow and significantly reduces context switching while improving overall productivity.
Tab completion is the thing I'd actually miss. It's the only one that predicts the edit I was already going to make rather than offering me a paragraph I have to read first, and that difference is the whole experience on a normal working day. Inline diffs in the file I'm looking at beat a chat window telling me about a file, and for anything scoped to one or two files this is still the fastest way I have to get it done.
It quietly loses the thread on a big repo and doesn't tell you. I'd rather it said the context was truncated than confidently edit a file against a version of my codebase that stopped being true forty messages ago, because the output looks identical either way and I only find out at review. A visible marker for what it actually has loaded would fix most of my complaints here.
I don't choose between them, I run both and they win different jobs. Claude Code takes anything where the plan matters more than the typing, four files and a migration, because it goes and reads what it needs first. Cursor wins the other 80% of the day, the single file edits where reading a plan costs more than just making the change.
Cursor has significantly improved my development workflow. It feels like working with an experienced AI pair programmer that understands the project context, helps with multi-file changes, explains code, generates implementations, and assists with debugging. The seamless VS Code experience and strong code editing capabilities make it one of the best AI coding tools available today.
Occasionally the AI loses context during very large refactoring tasks, and long-running agent sessions can require manual guidance. Better memory across sessions, improved handling of massive codebases, lower resource usage, and more transparent reasoning during complex edits would make the experience even better.
I also evaluated Claude Code, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf, Codex, and VS Code with AI extensions. I chose Cursor because it offers an excellent balance of project awareness, intelligent code editing, multi-file refactoring, debugging assistance, and an interface that fits naturally into my existing development workflow.
Cursor has fundamentally changed the way I build software.
I don't use it to replace engineering decisions—I use it to explore ideas faster, prototype different approaches, and remove repetitive work so I can focus on architecture and product decisions.
What stands out is how naturally AI is integrated into the editor. It feels less like an assistant and more like a collaborative development environment that understands the context of the codebase.
It's one of the few tools that has genuinely improved my daily workflow.
AI works best when developers stay in control, so I'd like to see even better transparency around why certain solutions are suggested and easier ways to compare alternative implementations before applying changes.
Performance has also improved significantly over time, but very large projects can still feel slower than a standard editor in some situations.
Before switching to Cursor I mainly used VS Code with GitHub Copilot.
Copilot is excellent for code completion, but Cursor provides a much more integrated AI experience. Being able to reason about multiple files, refactor larger pieces of code, and iterate quickly without constantly changing tools made the transition worthwhile.
It fits much better into the way I build products today.

I tested a few other AI-assisted coding tools, but Cursor stood out because of how well it integrates into the actual development workflow. It doesn’t feel like a separate layer added on top of the editor. The editing experience, speed, and context awareness are noticeably better than the alternatives I tried.
Cursor also handles full-file and multi-file changes more reliably, which makes it practical for real projects rather than just small tasks. The balance between automation and control is what convinced me to choose it. It speeds up the work without taking away the flexibility of writing code the way I prefer.
I use Cursor daily as my primary code editor for full-stack web and backend development. It serves as an active AI pair programmer across my entire workflow—from scaffolding new modules and writing boilerplate to multi-file refactoring, debugging complex error traces, and generating targeted unit tests.
Resource & Memory Usage: Cursor can become resource-intensive and consume high memory during full-codebase indexing or heavy Composer sessions on large monorepos.
Occasional "Thinking Loops" & Hallucinations: During complex multi-step edits, the agent can occasionally get stuck in loops or revert previously working logic if not guided with tight prompts.
Rapid Update Cycles: While rapid iteration is appreciated, frequent updates occasionally introduce minor UI bugs or breaking behavior with certain third-party extensions.
Pricing & Fast Requests: The pricing tier jump can be steep for individual hobbyists once fast-request allowances are exhausted.
Seamless VS Code Ecosystem: Because Cursor is built on a VS Code fork, migration is instantaneous. All extensions, keybindings, settings, and themes port over seamlessly without disrupting existing muscle memory.
Deep Context Awareness (@ symbols & codebase indexing): Cursor’s ability to index the full repository and reference specific files, folders, docs, and git commits makes its code suggestions and multi-file edits significantly more accurate than standard autocomplete tools.
Intelligent Multi-File Code Generation: Cursor Composer allows prompt-driven changes across multiple files simultaneously, handling large refactors and feature scaffolding in seconds.
Smart Autocomplete & Copilot++: The inline prediction is fast and contextual—it doesn't just guess the next line, it anticipates multi-line logic and repetitive patterns across the project.
Integrated Real-Time Debugging: Being able to highlight a terminal stack trace and ask the AI to pinpoint the exact failure line saves hours of troubleshooting.
Alternatives considered: GitHub Copilot in standard VS Code, JetBrains AI Assistant, and copy-pasting code into web-based LLMs (Claude/ChatGPT).
Why I chose Cursor: While GitHub Copilot and extension-based tools are good for single-line autocomplete, they feel bolted onto a standard editor. Cursor was designed from the ground up around AI interaction. Features like Composer (multi-file editing), deep full-codebase indexing, and instant diff reviews make it a true pair-programming environment rather than just an autocomplete assistant. It eliminated the friction of manually switching between browser LLMs and my editor.
The best coding agent for a while. it is expensive though. you pay a premium price for a premium agent.
pricing is an issue, especially because that different plans that everybody has. there is not enough clarity about pricing. one can spend 2 requests (same for any other model) for an opus 4.6 request, while other can spend 7 dollars
Cursor is just better at using the given model up to its limits. None of the other agentic products success that much. Also plan mode is a beast if you give some time to your task and plan everything carefully. While coding with the popular tech stacks, Cursor executes the plan flawlessly most of the time.
This product is a good solution when you start doing software. But first I think you should to learn some lessons from Cursor docs. Otherwise you could burn all your dollars on first iterations of working with it.
As I told before you could burn your token in during of the day. And when you working by Auto regime, it could send your request to gemini fast and you see the same loop of thinking which does not stop and going to burn your tokens. Therefore it's better to test some models by self before come to Cursor.
And yes, I understand that Cursor can't to share the same level of tokens as other AI providers. But anyway even 20/60$ subs does not align to my consume and 200$ is expensive for me.
Because I could work seamless with my servers, do bugfix, I really love bugfix regime how it works and debug by self, without my participation.
Great UI/UX for reviewing and approving/refusing code changes
The 20 bucks of my monthly subscription give a lot more value than competitors thanks to the "Auto" mode. I only need to resort to the "smart" models for few tasks. The credit goes by fast using those.
Debug mode works great.
It can be used for asking questions and learning new (code-related) things, not just coding.
Cursor has complete read access to my hard drive. While most of the time it sticks to reading inside the project folder, on occasions it has sniffed outside as it was trying to find a solution. IMO blocking read access outside the project path should be a built-in feature, not a "let the LLM decide".
When running multiple agents at the same time, there's no clear distinction of which new blocks of code were produced by which agent. This is particularly bad when I want to reset the state of the code at a certain point in a conversation with an agent.
On app restart, the app keeps getting confused about past accepted changes, and shows them as changes to still accept.
At the beginning I loved the autocomplete, but with time I write less code as I have moved more into the agentic flow. Autocomplete has become a bit annoying when it interacts with agents.

Cursor is one of the original AI code editors (2023 was a long time ago!) and has stood the test of time. It's a VS Code fork, which was key for me. I lean on @VS Code extensions and custom shortcuts. I was able to keep all of them (there is a migration assistant) when moving over to Cursor.
Cursor is very much an editor for looking at code as opposed to a vibe coding tool like @v0 by Vercel. My typical modes of using cursor are:
Describe a feature or a bug using Agent mode in the right sidebar.
Review diff + use AI autocomplete in editor.
I review every line of code an agent outputs. And I find myself editing code quite a bit. The agent still outputs code that is too verbose and, sometimes, not maintainable.
The price is nice too. $20/month is very reasonable.
I find 3 issues with the Auto model mode (as opposed to selecting a specific model):
It can be very verbose. This is where @Claude Code is much better.
Fails on complex problems. I end up selecting gpt-5 manually for these.
Kind of slow. @opencode with Grok Code seems at least 10x faster for simple prompts.
Also, I don't love using a dated fork of VS Code. I have been considering switching to VS Code + @Github Copilot extension since then I would be on the latest, vanilla VS Code.
Finally, Cursor also asks to be updated almost every day, which requires a restart. I like being on the latest software. But the restarts are very annoying. I run dev servers in the in-editor terminal. So I end up needing to restart the dev server every time I restart the editor.
I still use Claude Code quite a bit in a Cursor built-in terminal actually. But it's hard to beat all the editor integrations Cursor includes. Claude Code has just option+cmd+k.
I kicked the tires on OpenCode and really liked it. OpenCode is a terminal agent. So I didn't stick with it.
I used Windsurf for a while, and Windsurf felt like a magical upgrade over Cursor. Over time, it felt like Cursor caught up and then passed Windsurf. Honestly though, I haven't tried Windsurf in a while. Maybe it has advantages over Cursor again?
In spite of the pricing strategy issues, it became my de-facto daily driver. I'm so used to Cursor harness I'm struggling to even use its competitors well enough to make comparisons! :D Great job!
Ever since cursor launch, I still get occasional freezes where I'm forced to reboot the app to make it work
I find so much more useful to see what is happening while cursor is answering. That, combined with the extremely good harness, made it quite tough to beat
