It’s like having that friend who knows everything that’s happening, except it whispers directly into your ears as you walk around. BeeBot gives you a few short updates a day about people, places, and things nearby, emceed by your host, DJ BeeBot. BeeBot turns on automatically when you put your headphones in and stays quiet when you take them off. You can check in with DJ BeeBot to share what you’re doing or what’s happening nearby — BeeBot shares your updates with friends and other users nearby.

What do you think? …

Chris Messina

It's the resurrection of @MarsBot! But now rebuilt with more AI and social goodness.

Tips on How to Get the Most out of BeeBot:

  • Download the app (iOS only, US only)

  • Sync your address book so we know who you’d want to hear from.

  • Go to your Profile and add some “Keywords” — the more specific the better. Try to add at least 5 of them. (see the screenshot above for inspiration)

  • Add the BeeBot widget to your iPhone lock screen. This makes it super easy to pause/mute messages from the DJ… or to summon the DJ whenever you want. (You add widgets to your iPhone the same way you change wallpapers.)

The lock screen widget is the best way to pause/mute BeeBot.

  • If you have an Apple Watch, add the BeeBot watch complication and use your voice to send status updates. (it’s the fastest way to send updates — I use this multiple times a day)

  • Check in with DJ BeeBot! Tell us what you’re up to … or how you’re feeling … or what you’re thinking. Try doing it a few times a day. Don’t try too hard. Don’t overthink it. Have fun with it.

  • Don’t expect too much! We have this thing tuned to only tell you a few things per day — any more and you’d probably find it annoying! It’s been tricky enough to get the right length, cadence, frequency, and vibe for the DJ messages… never mind getting the content right. What we’ve got today is good enough to share, but there’s a LOT of room for improvement. We still have a LOT of “product editing” to do.

@chrismessina Any plans to link the 'status updates' to other health data (with permission) to make the DJ more contextual?

Dennis Crowley

@masump Health data... hmm haven't thought about this, but say more? Like steps + heart rate? Right now it's mostly triggered by changes on context -- places, neighborhoods, people.

Oh hey, Dennis here! Co-Founder @ Hopscotch / BeeBot (and formerly, Foursquare and Dodgeball). Thx for coming to our Product Hunt page! A bunch of our team members are now here (👋) to answer Qs, but the best place to start is reading this GIANT manifesto I wrote about building and launching BeeBot (warning: it's long!)

  1. Do you plan to roll out into Europe?

  2. How is the data about specific places collected?

  3. Can people contribute anything about the place?

Dennis Crowley

@busmark_w_nika
1. Yes, plan to be in Europe eventually (didn't want to deal w/ languages, etc for this v1)
2. We leverage the Foursquare API for a lot of places-based thing (I used to work at FSQ)
3. YES! We want people to share their thoughts about places / neighborhoods / the world in general

Max Sklar

Hi Everyone! This is Max Sklar, co-founder at Hopscotch/Beebot, and I've been working on these tools with @dens for a long time.

I'm really excited about the set of tools and infra that we built as part of this product that will drive the company in the future. This include our geofencing engine (fetching for nearby geofences which are selected on the fly, and triggering them), our personalization suite, and our use of LLMs to augment what would have been done by more traditional ML a decade ago (for categorizing/tagging/etc).

Let me know if you have any thoughts about all this, and tell us about your first experiences with Beebot!

Sanskar Yadav

Congrats on the launch!

How do you balance notification frequency to keep it useful without becoming overwhelming during the day?

Dennis Crowley

@sanskarix Honestly, this has been one of the trickiest parts -- length, cadence, frequency of messages (not to mention content, prose, vibe, relevancy, personalization). We're not perfect yet, but we're pretty good :)

I wrote a bunch about it here: https://dens.medium.com/say-hello-to-dj-beebot-592cdc1f1704

@dens Just started reading it, its a good read!
I'll finish it soon haha

Abdul Rehman

Finally, something that adds value to being offline and outside. Big fan of the idea!

Dennis Crowley

@abod_rehman Exactly! I am a big fans of software that can change the way you experience the real world.
