How to grow your LinkedIn account and maintain your presence there?

We're not going to lie. One of the key places people ask you for help with a PH launch is in LinkedIn DMs (followed by X and email).

Most connections I got were people from Product Hunt, so it is a pity not to use that platform.

I am trying to grow LinkedIn and play with many strategies, among:

  • posting several pieces of content per day

  • actively comment on other people's posts

  • send a certain number of connection requests per day

  • do collaborative posts with other creators

  • writing LinkedIn articles/newsletters (native feature)

Do you have a specific approach that has proven effective when you've wanted to grow on the LinkedIn platform?

I would also like to hear your LinkedIn journey. Feel free to share.

I posted several approaches in my original LI post if you are curious.
And if we are not connected yet, feel free to send a request.

How do you find the right people to connect to everyday?

Nika

@krishna_gupta51 Usually are those whose product sparked my attention the most :)

Jason Gelsomino

@krishna_gupta51 I think you hit the nail on the head for sure. It is not purely the number of people, but the "right" people. Its really about the quality of the connections you make on LI. I personally look for people whose challenges, issues, and interest align with mine which really leads to more engaging conversations.

Krishna Gupta

@jason_gelsomino agreed. there's so much noise that this has become a real problem

Nika

@krishna_gupta51  @jason_gelsomino I think this can apply to any social media – just have the right people around you!

@krishna_gupta51 Basically Linkedin suggests the connections you based on your present connections, skill set, companies you worked and your posts.

I launched a few months ago. The first blast I got on LinkedIn was people attempting to sell votes. After which I got a steady stream of people. Some are nice enough to write a little message which helps the initial connection.

I've been playing the game for a while, but it wasn't until I decided to stop playing that I saw steady traction. LinkedIn is great for some things. But once I started to push back on some of the rhetoric that others post I saw an uptick in people visiting, and connecting.

It's as if what I was saying, what I was calling out, and what I was pushing back against resonated enough with them to do so. Sometimes I feel as though people are so cautious on LinkedIn, that it becomes too sanitised, too safe.

Others are worried about hurting their chances for future employment, when in reality, if they are more themselves they would create a filter that would remove employers that wouldn't be a good fit for them.

@prmack Right? Nothing says authentic networking like a dozen “let me help you get 500 votes” DMs. 😂 Honestly, speaking your mind on LinkedIn is like breaking the fourth wall. Everyone’s thinking it, but few actually say it. Turns out, a bit of honesty is more viral than all the “inspirational Monday” posts combined.

Nika

@prmack I can see some shifts on LinkedIn. It is less formal than it used to be. OFC, many people from Product Hunt are asking for upvotes, that's for sure. But lately, I started meeting quite cool people there. It changes my perspective a bit so I am giving a chance to this platform.

Sanskar Yadav

Totally agree, @busmark_w_nika
Consistency + actual conversations = Growth on LinkedIn

My playbook guides to share quick stories, comment on posts I genuinely like, and always DM folks from Product Hunt launches (it’s wild how many cool connections come from launches or forums!).
Honestly, I don't look for growth on LinkedIn; I just like hanging out there sometimes.

Nika

@sanskarix But are those connections deep? Because I have a lot of shallow connections especially from those who only beg for upvotes :D

Sanskar Yadav

@busmark_w_nika  Same here, the ones who beg for upvotes almost never made it to my cool-connections list, but there are some people from PH that really matched the vibe. Here's a little secret- I hunt for good feedback (even if it's a tiny UI fix) and casually mention it in the conversation on LinkedIn. It sets a different pace for the conversation and sets you a little apart from the rest of the crowd.

Nika

@sanskarix True. I think the best relationships are those who are not about upvotes :)

Sanskar Yadav

@busmark_w_nika Speaking of which, I'm planning a launch in November :D

Think of LinkedIn like a stage: share your story, join the conversation, and keep it lively : )

Nika

@hemantha_vijay1 are we connected? :)

Hemantha Vijay

@busmark_w_nika Yep, we’ve been LinkedIn buddies since September 5, Here’s my profile : Linkedin 😄

Nika

@hemantha_vijay1 aaa sorry, I started seeing there many people so I am a bit lost :D

Paul Mackenzie

@hemantha_vijay1  Doesn't a stage invite performance though?

Helga Razinkova

Thank you for the hints, Nika! LinkedIn is definitely a powerful platform, worth your time and efforts, but my problem is that I don't have so much energy to stay consistent there. Well, no pain no gain, right? :)

Nika

@helga_impalpable I recommend giving it a try. :) We can become buddies :D

Helga Razinkova
@busmark_w_nika that’s bound to be a success then! 🤩
Abdul Rehman

Personally, meaningful comments and DMs have grown my network faster than anything else.

Nika

@abod_rehman Can you achieve the number you hit and in what time frame? I would like to know the intensity/effort and results.

PRIYANKA MANDAL

Thanks for sharing Nika. I need some improvement.

Nika

@priyankamandal You are welcome :)

I’ve been trying to grow my LinkedIn presence too, and honestly what’s worked best for me is just staying consistent and being real. Posting regularly (even short thoughts or small wins) keeps you on people’s radar, and commenting on others’ posts with genuine takes has helped me connect with some amazing folks.

Collab posts are great too, they bring in fresh audiences and make your feed more dynamic. I’ve also noticed that when I mix short updates with an occasional long-form article or newsletter, it builds credibility over time without feeling too “salesy.”

Also, I came across this great piece that digs into how analytics can help you grow smarter on social media. Definitely worth a read: Grow Your Business with Social Media Analytics Tools.

Curious to hear which of your strategies has brought you the most engagement so far?

Nika

@invokker Thank you for sharing these resources :) When it comes to me... MEMEs turned out to be the best format! :D

Abdul Rehman

For me, commenting thoughtfully on posts in my niche drove more engagement than posting daily.

Nika

@abod_rehman I would say that this is an initial strategy when someone is totally new and unknown... and when you start forming your opinionated profile, you will attract people naturally to follow your thoughts.

From comments to posts.

Nikhil Thale

@busmark_w_nika I used to just scroll and comment randomly, but things changed once I started keeping track of posts from people I actually want to connect with - founders, clients, and peers.

Commenting on their posts every day helped me grow way faster.

It’s all about showing up in the right places, not everywhere.

Nika

@nikhil_thale It is always about the circles you aspire to ;)
