This is sick! I've always wanted something like this that displays consumer carbon output That said, I'd love to know what security measures are in place for consumers to protect their financial information? How does the app use this information? What 3rd parties have access to this data?
Sanchali Pal
@tabish_gilani That's awesome, and great question. Joro doesn't sell your data to any third-parties. We only make money by taking a transaction fee if a user chooses to buy a carbon offset. We securely connect to a users' financial transaction data using the Plaid API. It's the same API that Venmo and other mainstream fintech apps use. It means we don't have to process or store any sensitive information on our servers, and you can connect your cards with peace of mind. Read more in our FAQs: https://www.joro.tech/faqs

@tabish_gilani We're so glad to hear that! And thanks for your question! As Sanchali mentioned, Joro uses Plaid as a secure middle-party to protect your financial data. Once you connect with Plaid, Joro is able to use the categories and dollar amounts of your transactions along with additional lifestyle context (diet, home size, etc) to calculate a carbon footprint value for each transaction. Joro will never share this transaction data with 3rd parties. Additionally, if you ever decide to delete your account, Joro respects your right to be forgotten and thoroughly purges all data we've ever stored for you.

@tabish_gilani Sanchali and Alex pretty much covered it all! But if you have any feedback on how we can better communicate how we protect our user's information (maybe mentioning it more in onboarding or throughout the app) that'd be great to hear!

Love this. Have been a user for a while now. Not only is it interesting, but it’s actually changing my behavior! It’s encouraging to understand how the little things you’re doing on a daily basis can make a difference.

@christie_horvath Together we matter! Thanks for your support.

@christie_horvath Thanks Christie! You're beating me on Joro this week, i gotta catch up...

I'm interested to see how this develops. I've been pitched this idea multiple times over the years and been skeptical about how products would get either a) accurate estimates or b) sufficient participation. Leaving aside b) for the smart people working on this product, leveraging the Plaid connection + industry-level estimates of emissions per $ is the best proxy for a) I've seen so far. However, the estimates still feel loose though, e.g. I change the subcategory of a purchase and the amount of carbon changes a lot. On the other hand, no one really thinks Fitbit steps are accurate as a discrete measure, and perhaps that's not really the point – it's the long term trends that matter here rather than unit-level accuracy. Overall I'm hopeful and excited to see how Joro evolves. In our household we have a goal to reduce our footprint, especially around online ordering and grocery shopping, so I'll be interested to track how we progress on that.
Sanchali Pal
@rodrigo_davies completely agree with this - really appreciate your thoughtful reflection. as you mentioned, i think getting super accurate is incredibly difficult, and maybe not the point. that said, joro does have to be accurate enough to drive decision-making in order to be useful. i think that means we have to get more accurate on some of the more "general" purchases like online purchases and grocery shopping as you mentioned. some ideas there are maybe including the vendor name, location, or some prompted user input to make estimates better.
Nick Reavill
@rodrigo_davies Thanks. Any carbon footprint calculator is always going to be an estimation, but we're excited to get feedback from our users to help make it more and more accurate as time goes on.

Hi Product Hunt community! I'm Sanchali, Founder at Joro. I'm excited to share our app here for the first time. We'd love your initial thoughts and feedback on the app - especially on your first experience and what you'd like to see next to keep you engaged with climate action. We're busy working on new features for offsets and challenges in particular, and hope to get your feedback on those soon, too.
Sanchali Pal
@princevince yes, we had a beta version out before! this is the first version we're 'launching' publicly on product hunt.
Sanchali Pal
@princevince i'll update my post slightly to make it clearer this is the first time we're sharing it here :)
Benjamin Hoffman
love this idea. really hope it gets traction. definitely seen a few ideas like this. great timing too... for Earth Day! 🌍
Sanchali Pal
@benhoffman_ thanks for your note and support! agree, it's about time we make something like this take off. hope we can create a way for people to take climate action from home this earth day!
Joe Rosen
Well executed, and a great cause. Curious why the name Joro? A name of course I like (-:, however curious how/why you guys chose it?
Sanchali Pal
@joro1 great minds think alike :) Joro means 'protector of the earth' - after the goddess of the earth in Norse mythology.
Joe Rosen
@sanchali I didn’t know this, thanks for the explanation, love it 🌍❤️!
Sanchali Pal
@joro1 Thanks Joe!
Dara Carroll
So glad Joro created an organized, user-friendly way to track and manage my CO2 output. It's also got an added benefit of making me more mindful of my spending since it shows you output by individual financial transaction.
Marie-eve Savard
@dara_carroll Thanks for your kind review!

It’s so incredible to see a product that bridges your daily individual choices to the bigger picture, and in doing so effectively addresses one of the key barriers for sustainable behavior change - the ability to transform awareness to action.
Marie-eve Savard
@parvathy_menon1 That's so true! Couldn't have said it a better way.
Eileen Guan
@parvathy_menon1 Thanks Parvathy! You nailed it. That's what our mission is centered around, individual action creates collective change. :)

Question for the Product Hunt community: Would you be interested in using Joro to build and track sustainable habits? What types of habits would you be interested in tracking or changing to see how it affects your carbon footprint? We're working on a new feature and would love your thoughts.
Ryan Hoover
Awesome to see the progress since we spoke last year, @sanchali. The new branding is nice. ✨
Sanchali Pal
@rrhoover Thanks Ryan! That means a lot. Look forward to getting your thoughts on some of the updates to come.
