Is AppSumo a natural next step after Product Hunt for early-stage SaaS products?
byβ’
We recently joined @appsumo Radar π, which got me thinking about the role AppSumo plays for early-stage SaaS products after a Product Hunt launch.
My impression is that it's a great opportunity to connect with engaged early adopters who are willing to explore new products, provide honest feedback, and help shape the roadmap while also becoming early customers.
I'm curious how other founders see it.
If you've launched on AppSumo, what was your experience?
Did it help you build a community, improve the product, or acquire long-term customers?
And looking back, what ended up being your most effective channel for acquiring your first paying users?

Have you noticed a difference in the quality of feedback between Product Hunt users and AppSumo buyers? they seem like very different audiences.

@neri_zavadilΒ We only recently started using AppSumo as a marketing channel, so we still do not have enough data to make a strong comparison.
In general, I feel Product Hunt users can be very valuable long term because the community has a lot of founders, operators, and experienced business people. The feedback there is often more strategic and business oriented.
For AppSumo, what we heard from people who recommended it to us is that it can be very useful for testing the product, infrastructure, onboarding, and core features at a larger scale.
So I see them as different audiences, but both can be valuable in different ways.
Do you think AppSumo customers are actually loyal users or are they mostly deal hunters who rarely stick around?

@drew_dunhamΒ I think it's a mix of both.
There will always be a lot deal hunters on AppSumo, but I also see it as a chance to reach a much larger audience than most early stage startups could on their own. If your product solves a real problem and you continue improving it, some of those users naturally become if they see enough value in the platform and eventually decide they need the full feature set..
We've actually just started using AppSumo as a promotion channel, so we don't have enough data yet to judge retention or conversion. But so far, we see it as a great opportunity to get our product in front of people who might never have discovered us otherwise
One thing I have always wondered does the lifetime deal pricing ever create tension when you later introduce premium features or subscriptions? How do you balance early supporters with long term sustainability?

@manjesh_yadav1Β That was one of the things we thought about very carefully before launching the lifetime deal.
We designed the AppSumo tiers in a way that keeps the product sustainable long term, especially because we do not expect large infrastructure costs from those accounts in the future. We also separated the AppSumo tiers and regular plans clearly, so both sides make sense.
At the same time, all updates that improve the general platform experience and everyday usage will be available to all users, including AppSumo customers. The goal is to respect early supporters, but still keep the business healthy enough to keep building.
Some founders say AppSumo brings revenue but not retention. Has your experience been different so far or is it still too early to tell? I would love to hear your honest perspective.

Hi @jordan_bulkΒ !
Honestly, it is still too early for us to say.
Revenue is okay, but you also have to wait around 60 days, so if someone is doing AppSumo only for quick revenue, I am not sure that is the best angle.
For us, the bigger goal is to get real users who will actually use the platform, test it, and give feedback. From what I heard from other founders, some AppSumo users can later convert into regular plans, but time will show how that works for us.
I am curious did joining AppSumo change your roadmap because of customer feedback, or were feature requests mostly aligned with your original vision?

Hi@twagiramungu_yves! We already had a pretty clear roadmap, so AppSumo did not completely change our direction.
But even after our Product Hunt launch, users pointed out a few features we had underestimated or placed lower on the priority list. A good example is n8n integration. It was already on our roadmap, but after seeing the demand from users, we decided to prioritize it much earlier.
So I would say the feedback is mostly aligned with our original vision, but it helps us understand what should come first.

I have experience launching products on AppSumo after we published them on ProductHunt. AppSumo provided us with deeper insights than ProductHunt. We received real users and feedback, which is quite specific because the AppSumo audience is a niche one. And after using AppSumo, you will still need to figure out how to reach your target audience.
