Google Allo - Smart messaging app that helps you say more and do more.

by
Google Allo is a smart messaging app that helps you say more and do more. Express yourself better with stickers, doodles, and HUGE emojis & text. Allo also brings you the Google Assistant

As a privacy nut-job, I'll be the naysayer here and say, thanks but no thanks. I'm already considering storing my phone in a Faraday cage until I need it. This is just one more way that the phone can be used against me. All reports I am seeing is that for "machine learning" everything Allo records is stored permanently. This means that at some point, a government will demand access. On a side note, anyone else making the "Allo, Allo" joke? (old british sitcom?) No? Just me? :)

Yes and by the way that is a long message

@mchang @google congratulations, I cannot wait to see it working in my hands. Are you planning to open an API for developers?

Good luck with this. It looks great, and yet I have no idea whether this will take off or not (initial downloads are different to long-term usage/uptake).. It makes me pretty sad that Google backtracked on their privacy promise to instead store and process messages in the cloud unless you opt-in to privacy. The fact that there's no SMS support means this is not the iMessage competitor many had hoped for on Android. This is also locked to one device, and "if you activate on another device, you lose your name, profile picture, chats, and contacts.". Really? Our chats, contacts and photos are unsecurely held by Google but we can't have them. Assistant is sweet, but even then apparently feature parity & a smooth launch can't be managed across platforms. '“Set an alarm” works on Android Allo, not on iOS', for example.
