For almost two years, Perplexity wasn't just a search tool, it was the first app I opened every morning on my iPhone. I used it for everything: running advice tailored to my age, diet recommendations, shopping decisions at Watsons, even how to respond to certain messages. I'd screenshot a conversation and upload it, and the response was always sharp, contextual, and genuinely useful.

What made it special wasn't just the search quality, it was the feeling that it actually understood me. It made searching feel like talking to someone informed and reliable, not just querying a database. For a long time, I preferred it over ChatGPT without hesitation.

A lot changed around the start of this year, and not for the better. Three specific things broke the experience for me:

Upload limits. There is now a cap on how much you can upload, which killed one of my most-used workflows, screenshot and getting contextual responses.

AI switching. When Claude usage hits a threshold, Perplexity automatically switches to its own AI model. The quality difference is noticeable and jarring. It no longer feels consistent.

Context retention. This was the final straw. When I continue a conversation on the same topic, it no longer holds the context of earlier exchanges. I have to re-explain everything from scratch, which defeats the entire purpose of a conversational search tool.

I used Perplexity over ChatGPT for nearly two years because the search quality and contextual understanding felt superior. Perplexity felt more like a research companion, it would go and find things, then tell you what to do with the information.

ChatGPT felt more like a text generator. That gap has narrowed significantly now that Perplexity's quality has dropped.
