WhatsApp for Desktop - Beautiful Mac, Windows & Linux desktop client for WhatsApp

WhatsApp for Desktop gives you the possibility to have all your messages in all your chats synchronized on your PC. And do not worry about security, every message is encrypted so only you and the recipient can read it, hear it or see it.

Once again great work by @aluxian who already successfully released http://www.producthunt.com/tech/... For me now the suite is complete & I can have all communication on my desktop. No need to switch between desktop & phone all day long when chatting during the day. Feel free to contribute and improve the product. The source code is available at https://github.com/Aluxian/Whats...

@nikgraf Thanks again for the submission! :)
Nik Graf
@aluxian My pleasure, your products rock! :)

@aluxian @nikgraf Wow.... I was just thinking about something like this yesterday and POOF, it's on product hunt! Nice work, I will share some feedback once I play with it!
Alexandru Rosianu
@oassoulin @nikgraf Haha great! Please do share your feedback :)

shame that it says "Not compatible with iOS" in small writing quite far down the page; could be good if that was more prominent
Alexandru Rosianu
@_jacksmith Sorry, I'll make it more prominent.

@_jacksmith @aluxian hi :) Check our new app FastChat :) https://www.producthunt.com/post...

Unfortunately not for the Mac, unless you have an Android phone you can use to activate the webapp. Whatsapp for iPhone still doesn't support barcodes.
Nik Graf
@t55 I haven't tried yet, but that should do it: http://www.idownloadblog.com/201...

@nikgraf @t55 "You must be jailbroken in order to follow this tutorial" ;(

@t55 Yep, WhatsApp for Desktop is cross-platform, but only compatible with some mobile devices. It's incompatible with iOS due to how the operating system works – it doesn't allow apps work in the background.
Robin Good
@t55 that's really a shame

I have been using it for a while, but hasn't this been around for too long to make it to product hunt ? Just asking.
Nik Graf
@rish_says The desktop client is a wrapper made by @aluxian only a couple days ago. The web app is available since a while and has been hunted back then: https://www.producthunt.com/tech...
Alexandru Rosianu
@rish_says Indeed, WhatsApp Web has been around for a while. But "WhatsApp for Desktop" was officially launched last Friday, so it's pretty new :)
Rish
@nikgraf @rish_says my bad! I jumped to conclusions too fast. Checking it out, since I love the web app :)
Rish
@aluxian @rish_says Thanks for building this, and sorry for jumping to conclusion too soon. Checking it out, thumbs up.
Alexandru Rosianu
@rish_says No problem, Rish. I hope you like the app too.

WhatsApp is apparently working on a version that enables this functionality for iOS users. A beta version can be downloaded (see http://www.whatsappforall.com/wh...), but you need to sign it using developer tools before you can install it.
Alexandru Rosianu
@jwvd That's good news!
Dan Hough
Is this a node-webkit wrapper around the WhatsApp web client?
Alexandru Rosianu
@basicallydan Yep! It's WhatsApp Web running on nw.js (formerly node-webkit). On top of it, I made notifications work, I added custom themes (coming in the next release) and I did some other tweaks to improve the experience.
Pierrick
People shouldn't bother with WhatsApp and use Telegram instead. https://telegram.org
Alexandru Rosianu
@pierrickgt I agree, I myself like Telegram much more. But it's hard to switch when most of your friends use WhatsApp already...
Skematica
@aluxian @pierrickgt sounds like Facebook!

Maybe advertise for the OS X version when iOS is compatible. I guess most OS X users have an iPod or iPad... no ?
Alexandru Rosianu
@steveraffner Yep, most Mac users have an iOS device, but some (myself included) don't. So there still are some potential users.
Ouriel Ohayon
please make it clear on your site that this does not work with iOS and only works with android. i just wasted 5 min trying to understand why it was not working
Alexandru Rosianu
@ourielohayon I'm sorry, I will make it more prominent.
Rafael Albuquerque
I don't want to be that guy, but what's different from the web version since this is just a webview loaded with an iframe? Apart from notifications.
Alexandru Rosianu
@rafaqueque Custom themes (coming in the next release) and tweaks for better integration with the OS: launch on startup & run in the tray.
