Why your brain stops hearing your alarm (and 5 fixes)
Building Volyia taught us something we did not expect: the hardest problem in an alarm app is not volume, it is habituation.
Anything repeated identically every single morning stops registering as urgent. That is why adding a second, third and fourth alarm does not help, and why so many people turn alarms off in their sleep with no memory of it afterwards. It is not a discipline problem.
The five things that actually held up, especially for people whose shifts rotate:
Change the sound weekly. Novelty is the entire mechanism.
Make stopping it require a decision. A single tap can happen while you are still asleep. A task cannot.
Anchor a wake window, not a bedtime. If your shifts move, a fixed bedtime was never keepable.
Get bright light on your face in the first ten minutes.
Track the pattern over weeks, not the individual night.
The second one is what we built the product around. Volyia does not stop because you touched it. It stops when you prove you are awake, then it tracks your rhythm privately with no monitoring.

Curious what the makers here have found. If you work irregular hours, which of these actually worked for you, and which one failed?
