Uber is getting into the credit card industry, offering a competitive 4% back on restaurants/dining, 3% on travel, 2% on ecommerce, and 1% overall cash back. This is an impressive offer (most cards max out at 2-3%, and I only know of a single AMEX card that has offered more than 4% on restaurants - and that was just for a special promo). Incredibly excited for this. Already set my calendar.

@nickabouzeid I'm a CC nerd. This is quite exciting and blows away cards at no annual fee rates. ๐Ÿ’ณ

@nickabouzeid With the Chase Sapphire Reserve you get 3x points on Travel AND Dining and those points can be redeemed for 1.5ยข/pt. So you get 4.5% cash back on Dining + Travel and 1.5% cash back on everything else. Uber card is only better on e-commerce (which if you're spending that much online, it's probably on Amazon and you should get the 5% cash back Amazon card).

@chris_hutchins sure but for average person who doesn't want to spend $450 on CSR then this is a great card. Personally I won't be applying for this as I have the CSR.
Nick Abouzeid
@chris_hutchins Quynh hit the nail on the head: the Uber card doesn't include the annual $450 fee, which probably makes this a better investment overall for most spenders. Seems like a simple enough Google Doc to build though! (maybe a fun weekend project ๐Ÿค”)

@nickabouzeid @chris_hutchins +1 Amazon Visa was awesome at 3% cash back, but ever since 5% w/ no annual fee, for me and my family, it's THE card to have.

"This offer is available only to applicants who are residents of the United States, with the exception of Puerto Rico and the US territories" ๐Ÿ˜ข Is there a EU-valid credit card that comes anywhere close to this?
Mihai Anca
@hellotiago No. EU capped the interchange fee to 0.3%, not much left so that banks can afford to give out rewards. So on the upside merchants will have to pay much less for card processing.

The 4% back on dining is appealing but I still don't think it rivals the Amazon card that gets you a whopping 5% back on Amazon purchases ๐Ÿ˜
Kevin Clayland
@yefim True. I was considering getting this card until I realized most of my purchases are on amazon. theres no way I could eat out at the rate I buy things on amazon.
Nick Abouzeid
@yefim The trick is... why can't you get both?
Kunal Bhatia
@yefim @nickabouzeid setting up the rotation is key. For me, having 3-4 cards for specific purposes works. Beyond that, it would get confusing!
Nick Abouzeid
@yefim @kunalslab I won't tell you how many cards are in my wallet then... ๐Ÿค”
Kunal Bhatia
@yefim @nickabouzeid I should have clarified. 3-4 regularly in the rotation! I have a bunch of one off cards that I'll use sparingly, like JetBlue for JetBlue purchases only. I just don't keep them all in my wallet ๐Ÿ™‚

As always, The Points Guy has the best pros/cons breakdown on this: https://thepointsguy.com/2017/10...

The phone insurance on this seems amazing. $25 deductibles, and it covers up to $600 in damage per incident. A lot of people are going to feel comfortable going caseless now.

So nobody really cares that this is just a data grab by a company that has a history of not being good Keepers of there data? OK

Interesting! To me personally, the most exciting part is the "No Foreign Transaction Fees On Purchases Outside the U.S." However I wonder if that means I can travel to Australia and not feel bad every time I use the credit card?
Justin Lam
@orliesaurus If it's anything like the Amazon Visa credit card, then yes. As a Canadian who makes a lot of USD purchases, no foreign transaction fees is a godsend.
Arun
@orliesaurus exactly.
Daylen Sawchuk
@orliesaurus @justinonthelam Has Chase announced that they will discontinue the Amazon.ca credit card? I know the card is no longer open for applications, just wondering if they are keeping it for current customers.
Justin Lam
@orliesaurus @askdaylen Hey sorry for the late reply. I haven't heard anything about the credit card being discontinued, and I'm really hoping it stays that way.
Mike Barwick
Cool. But my question is - why!?
Chris
Matti Heubner
Interesting! Will this be US only?
Yefim Vedernikoff
@mattiheubner looks like it.
Arun
@mattiheubner that's the case for now. Will likely expand based on challenges involved.
Sambruce Joseph
@mattiheubner Everything nice always starts rolling in US first
Daniel Jรถrg
@mattiheubner @sambrucejoseph yeah, unfortunately. I need to get more patient :)
Sven van der Zee
It's cool, but I don't like credit cards
