What actually stopped you from making your first trade?

This is the question we keep arguing about internally. Stock Picks is paper trading with real prices, real spreads, real options pricing, but the cash is simulated. The obvious objection is that without real money on the line, you don't feel the mistake, so you don't learn from it. Our position is that you learn the mechanics for free and the discipline later, which is better than learning both while paying tuition to the market. But I'm genuinely unsure where the line is.

For anyone who's done both, how different did the first real trade feel from the practice ones? Did it transfer, or was it a different sport once the money was yours?
