New Snapchat - The new Snapchat, redesigned to separate social from media

by

New Snapchat now separates the social from the media. This means that the Chats and Stories from your friends are on the left side of Snapchat, and the Stories from publishers, creators, and the community are on the right.

Instagram be like - let the work begin.
8 days later - welcome Instagram Direct.
The biggest update in this release is the separation of social (i.e. your friends) and media (i.e. entertainment content), similar to the rumors that Facebook might do the same to their coveted feed by tucking brand content behind an Explore feed (see 's ). Side note: I found it interesting that introduced the feature in the promo video. Previous videos were typical flashy music videos showcasing new features.
It feels like this promo video wasn't made for snapchat's users but more for the press / investors in mind (seeing as the redesign was also announced in that earnings report thing a few weeks back).
It would be interesting to see how the ad revenue affects this change. As now number of media ads/snap story clicks and views will surely go down a lot of folks only interested in a social private network. (my assumption!)
As we can see Facebook is moving/planning in adjusting the feed (changing algo or whatever you say), I guess Evan was again the first mover. the question still remains, how it affects the revenue.
So a content filter and a relevancy algorithm is a redesign these days 🤔
Interesting. Still feel like Snapchat breaks every UI rule in the book.
This is a solid point, it's funny watching people unfamiliar with it try and understand how it works... they've never been afraid to challenge conventions at risk of alienating people 👻
After two years of use, I still don't understand how much of it works.
This is very pro-user and that's awesome, but I'm curious as to how the advertisers will react to this. Can't wait to try it out.
Evan’s smart to double down on friends - it’s Snapchat’s best differentiatior from Insta (no pressure from likes, comments, perfectly filtered content, posting at peak times, etc). wonder how they will separate “creators” in discover from “friends” in chat? people who are mutually friends with each other = chat screen? if so, viewership of stories is definitely going to go down for creators...
I had the same question and read in that if someone follows you back it's considered a friend, and if it doesn't follow you'll see their story on the discover page.
The announced reboot of Snapchat was not so huge :) I was thinking about a total identity rebrand and UI overhaul. They kept the ghost logo which actually doesn't reflect what is Snapchat now
Wait, what? Who is going to choose to be advertised to and want to go to that side. And which advertiser is going to choose to be relegated to be hidden?
The strategy is to gain some more users first. Then thinking about advertisers. Without new users advertisers won't pay ;)
This is interesting. For sure a different experience for users but it’s something I’m looking forward to, can’t wait to see how others react to it.
Love the layout. Is there still gonna be an easy-to-access alphabetized list of the people I follow where I can watch their stories? That's really the main thing that was holding me back from switching to IG Stories. I'm a loyal snapchattee to the extent that to this day, I've still never posted a single story outside of SC, but the simplicity of snapchat's story findability has always been its winning feature for me.
