Feature spotlight: not every goal's progress should look the same

by•

Second one in this series ( was about tasks and habits rolling up into a goal, a couple posts back).

This time it's about the number itself, not how it moves but what it even is.

A goal like "run 300km this year" has a real number under it: kilometers done, kilometers left. 180/300, 60%, done. But "finish the coding bootcamp" doesn't have a natural number, you either got through it or you didn't, so forcing a percentage onto it (does 40% bootcamp even mean anything) felt worse than just asking yes or no. And a goal built out of smaller tasks, like getting a side project launch-ready, needs its progress to come from whatever's underneath it instead of either of those.

I used to think a goal tracker just needed one progress bar and every goal would fit into it eventually. It doesn't. Retic picks the shape per goal instead of forcing one bar on all of them: a number for goals like the running one, a plain yes/no for goals like the bootcamp, and whatever's underneath for goals built out of smaller pieces. Same tree, different math depending on what the goal actually is.

Anyone else been forced into a single progress-bar shape for goals that clearly didn't fit it? What did you do, fake a percentage, split it into a different app, or just stop tracking that one?
