My app asked for money before it showed new users anything. Not any more.
From the very first build, opening Pulse asked for a licence key before it would do anything at all. No demo, no trial, nothing for new users. My reasoning felt principled at the time: a demo is a hole in the thing that asks for money, and I did not want a half version of the app floating around being judged.
What actually happened is that new people downloaded the DMG, opened it, met a wall, and closed it. I was asking strangers to pay for something they had never once seen running on their own Mac. The notch is a personal piece of screen. Nobody can tell from a screenshot whether they want something living in it.
So as of this week, Pulse runs free for seven days.
Press one button on first launch and every app is on
No card, no account, nothing to type
Not a trimmed down version, the whole app
On day eight it stops by itself and asks. You are never charged
What Pulse actually does, if you have not seen it:
Music, with real controls in the notch
Your next meeting with a join button, then mute, camera and leave once you are in the call
A clipboard that remembers links, colours, images, code and text
Drag files onto the notch to AirDrop them, or park them on a shelf until you have collected the rest
Live CPU, GPU, memory, network and power, and every tile opens into its own history
Reminders, weather, a focus timer, device batteries and CI builds
