Interesting it's not launched under the Nest brand.

@alexmr Agree. Find that very odd considering the recent restructure.
Scott Davis
@alexmr they've gotta start releasing products that cover every letter of the alphabet now.... ;)
Brett Goldstein
@alexmr remember Nest and Google Access & Energy are technically separate private companies under Alphabet now Hypothetically, Nest could release a competitor to onHub :P

Am I the only one who doesn't care for the idea of Google seeing every single bit of data I use? I like to see advancements in this type of technology, don't get me wrong, but there are ways to surf without Google eying everything you do (Ghostery, Ad Block Plus, etc). Not with this. Does anyone know if their ToS allows them to access the data and sell to advertisers?

@fbara Good question. Since they're not offering it for free, I'm hopeful that this isn't their intention. But you can say the same thing about Google Fiber...
Frank
@taykcrane Wow, I forgot about Google Fiber! Seems like it's their plan to own both end of the pipe as well as the data going thru it. Interesting.

Interesting to see Google get into the router business. The branding seems to distance the product from Google, too. Here's to hoping it's worth the $199 pricetag! "Customer support will be available 24/7 starting Aug 31. Check back for details!" Hmm, could this be a Google product with good customer service?!

Looks eerily similar to Amazon Echo. Just saying...

Hopefully Google Fiber Subscribers will be able to get these - they're completely sold out now.

@scorinth They're not sold out, they're just not available yet, you have to preorder it seems.
Scott Davis
@scorinth According to Amazon.com the OnHub will be available on August 31st

Glad to see some action here. Routers haven't seen much change, even the Apple Airports feel pretty limited. This is the heart of the home network, interesting to see Google claim that space.

@prateeks definitely agree. they are literally showing the middle finger to apple and microsoft and smiling while doing it. i'd wager to say it's co-made by tp-link (hence availability on tp-link) but always up to date firmware is a godsend. props to @google for recognizing an unspoken need/problem and presenting the possibility of a seamless solution

they should bundle it with Google Fiber. not a standalone product which i am not sure is solving a problem most people have.
