When you have a new idea do you buy the domain straight away or wait a while? I tend to get the domain first hence why I have about 10 unused domains right now 😬

I usually buy the domain when I am clear about the name of the project, or when a very good name occurs to me but with no idea behind.

When the idea is solid and you are completely sure that you are going to go for it 💪
I like to buy them early because it gives me a motivation to start working on the product. Usually I just chuck a very simple email sign up onto the page with my value proposition so I have something for people to click and sign up if interested.

When I think I found a good one - usually a short, relevant name with .com domain availability. I give it one day. If I still think it's a cool name, I buy it. Otherwise, I don't. Though I have these criteria and processes, I still end up buying a lot of domains every year.
A comment about buying a domain upfront we got from an IndieBrands customer Zack ( tw: @wenquai) was: "As soon as I saw float.so listed on Indiebrands, I knew I had to buy it. I didn't even have an idea for Float at the time - I actually wanted to use the domain to build a Webflow ⇒ React conversion tool. It's just great to keep an inventory of company names/domains, even if you don't use them immediately."
So you're not alone. There seem to be a lot of people buying domains upfront.
