What is the most memorable piece of software that was shaping your personality and career?

This will be a bit of a nostalgic memory moment.

I believe that most makers got into computers at an early age and worked in programs that may have already fallen into disrepair, but were crucial for their development and career direction.

Which old software changed your life? :D

Here is a list of mine:

  • Sketchbook – this is where I drew houses and landscapes, the beginnings of my art (I was about 8 years old)

  • Notepad on Windows 1998 – this is where I wrote stories as an 8-year-old

  • Photoshop PS 4 – when I was 14 I edited my photos, mostly it was crap, e.g. I photoshopped a third eye onto my face :D

  • Sony Vegas – this is where I made my first videos (14 years old)

I wouldn't say it was just a piece of software, but an operating system—Linux opened many doors for me.

I am 29, and still haven't experienced that one :D

Age of Empires II. Still remember the sounds better than half the things I learned in school.

What did it teach you? :D

For me that was Norton Commander in MS-Dos when I was 10 years old. Then there was programming in Pascal, later VBA for Excel and C++, a bit of Photoshop (probably everyone edited their photos at some point 😅). I became Data Analyst and then switched to development. Funny to look back and see the straight line from moving files around in Norton Commander as a kid to building software today.

Remember when I opened some software and inside was the code. I wasn't impressed and was like: huh, what hieroglyphs are these? :D

Google Sketchup got me hooked on CAD. There was this plugin called sketchy physics and it could do simualtions of mechanical systems, very basic ones. This got me interested and I was learning solidworks and autocad the moment i got to highschoool
Atom was my first proper code editor.
Ubuntu 8.04 got me into linux.

There was this super innovative company called Aviary back in 09, they had web based image and vector graphics. Kinda like photoshop. I showed it to the teacher in computer class. They liked it. I remember being fascinated. Because photoshop was the go to back then.

Age of Empires 2: Conquerors. I still quote the lines to this day lmao

This is the very first time I have heard about Google Sketchup. It looks like a very moderate version of Blender.

It was a revelation, from 06 to 2012 it was my go to.

Mine was probably paint. just drawing absolute nonsense for hours lol.

Same same. But mostly it was the same. Grass, house, sun and sky :D

Photoshop at 12 was a dangerous combination.

Tell us, what did you create?

MSN messenger the custom statuses were taking themselves SO seriously.

you could possibly create a new-age version of ICQ :D

I remember changing one line of HTML and refreshing the page 20 times to see what happened.

 what happened? :D

I used to make little videos in Movie Maker and force my family to watch them.

Did they appreciate your editing skills? (There were limited options tho) :D

CorelDRAW takes me back to the computer lab days. That interface felt so complicated back then.

 I missed this one.
