Screen recordings suit us better than screenshots but definitely not the fancy ones

The hero screenshot has been swapped for a fifteen second, unmotivated clip of a single task performed in real time, no zooming, no narration, no music.

Sign-up from this page was markedly improved. The slick two-minute video, which we paid for last year, remains on our about page and is rarely viewed.

My analysis is that people want proof of its effectiveness, not a story of how important it is. Fifteen seconds of proof will do.

Have you tested a raw clip against your video? Wondering if this holds true outside of developer tools, since my hunch is that a consumer audience would expect something else, but have no proof of this.

I’d be curious whether the same result holds when the product needs explanation before the value is obvious. My guess is that a raw clip works best when the benefit can be understood almost immediately.
