How do you explain your interest in new tools without sounding like a tech Addict?

A colleague caught me looking at software releases the other day and asked what I was doing.

I tried explaining that I just like testing niche products for fun but halfway through the sentence I could tell they thought I was crazy.

Most people outside this space just don't get the excitement of finding a simple app that fixes a tiny daily annoyance. Now I just minimize my browser whenever someone approaches my desk to save myself the effort.

Has anyone figured out a normal 5-second way to explain this interest to non-tech people?
