Case study on a 6-moth journey of a website from scratch (just raw numbers and analysis)
The starting line
New domain, launched in January. No indexed pages, no referring domains, no keyword rankings, nothing for search engines or AI systems to recognize the brand as. This is the hardest starting position there is: no existing trust to borrow from, everything has to be earned from scratch, on both fronts at once.
Where it stood six months later
We track this with three sources running in parallel (Search Console, SEMrush, and our own analytics), so these numbers are measured, not estimated:

On the SEO side:
+330% organic traffic, from a near-zero starting point
224 organic keywords ranking (+81%)
363 referring domains, 2,500 backlinks built from nothing
Authority Score of 15
On the GEO side:
67 pages cited by AI answer engines
Split across four platforms: ChatGPT (48), Gemini (15), Google AI Mode (9), Google AI Overviews (2)
Neither number happened instead of the other. Same audit, same content, same backlinks, same monthly review, read two ways.
The part that actually surprised us
For almost three months, nothing happened. Both lines were flat, traffic and citations. Every piece of the puzzle was going in, technical fixes, content, backlinks, and the graphs just sat there.
Then, right around month four, they both broke upward at the same time.
That flat stretch isn't a sign something's wrong. It's the Citation Lag Problem we talk about a lot, and it turns out it applies to organic rankings too: both take 6 to 8 weeks to build, and both only compound once the technical foundation, the content, and the off-site signals are all sitting there together. Most teams give up right around the point where it's about to work.
The honest part
86 monthly visits is not a big number of course.
At six months on a brand-new domain, the job isn't traffic volume yet, it's building the thing that produces it: indexed pages, real rankings, a recognizable entity, a real link profile. That's what's in place now. The 330% growth rate is what tells you it's working, not the absolute count, and the same is true of the citation number.
If someone promises you a new domain will have huge traffic in six months, ask how.
What I'd tell anyone starting from zero
Run technical, content, and off-site work at the same time, for SEO and GEO together. Sequencing them means neither curve bends.
Build pages that are genuinely extractable, not just crawlable. Clear answers win both rankings and citations.
Expect the flat months. Budget for them. Don't quit at month two.
Backlinks aren't about volume. They pass ranking authority and give AI multiple places to confirm you're real, at the same time.

I like how you shared the slow beginning because many founders panic too early. Seeing both SEO and GEO grow together shows that patience and consistent execution often matterI more than chasing quick wins.
me finding the citation lag insight was valuable because it explains why early results often feel disappointing. keeping technical work content and backlinks running together seems much smarter than waiting to finish one before starting another.
