Hello Product Hunt! I'm Adam, the solo creator of CheckinBee. Often life gets in the way of keeping in touch with our aging parents as much as we'd like. I know this is true for me. Having moved to the US from England, visiting my mother a few times a week soon became having a video call once a month. Like many elderly people living alone, my mother is fiercely independent and doesn’t want her family to be worrying about her. Although in her mid-80s, she is healthy, goes swimming twice a week, lives in her own home and loves life. I built CheckinBee to ensure that our family had peace of mind that our mother was ok every day, especially when it could sometimes be a week between one of our family speaking with her. I made sure that the app could communicate with a wide circle of family and friends, so that if my mother ever missed a check-in, her friends and family living locally could check in to ensure everything was fine while also keeping me informed. CheckinBee hasn’t replaced regular calls, but has simply supplemented the communication and care for my fiercely independent mother. I'm very excited to launch CheckinBee into the world and provide this peace of mind to others. I would love your feedback as I keep improving CheckinBee

I remember following this app not too long ago. It reminds me of the necklace with a button on it that was created for old people in case if they fell or were nearing incapacitation. Great idea, especially for lonely old people nowadays that can die at any moment.

@kingromstar Thank you for your comment and for your kind words. As opposed to the emergency buttons that you mentioned, our service would alert the care circle when their is inaction (not checking in for the day) instead of an action taken (like pressing an emergency button) but both certainly have their place to keep people living alone safe. Thanks

This is a meaningful problem to solve. Thanks for addressing that. Just some opinions from product design perspective, asking elders to repeatedly confirm if he/she is okay may be a not-enjoyable and easy-to-miss task. Have you encountered those issues from users yet? Just an idea that comes to mind (if the technical is feasible), is to let your app track usage or activities of another app that elders usually use in daily routine (facebook, whatapp,..), instead of asking them to confirm directly. If possible, the usage can be analyzed to detect some abnormal activities (for example, the elders reply Yes to reminder, just because they don't want their child to worry, but if the usage data shown that they don't use their favorite app, may be he/she is feeling not good?)

@vu_nguy_n_quang Thank you for your detailed feedback, I really appreciate it. You bring up some excellent points. In the future, I would love to explore options for a more passive way of checking in, such as monitoring 'normal' daily activity. One concern I have for that sort of method is with privacy. I want to try and avoid any sort of tracking as much as possible but I do see the potential benefits. It is something that I will explore as I continue to improve the service. Thank you again

Was just thinking the other day how my grandmas (on my dad's and mum's sides) are alone at home and literally the best things are phone calls / visits from us. Awesome!

Seems really helpful! Does it only use SMS, or will it also support WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger in the future?
Adam Lack
@vikiyur Thank you for your comment and support. That is a great question. For the initial version, we currently only use SMS for the check-ins. However, we do plan to add alternatives such as Whatsapp in the future so that users have more flexibility with how they want to check-in. Thanks

This app is a digital lifeline for seniors! It's simple to use and has made their life more convenient and connected. How come you create this idea :) You may able to add more feature in the future as well. Very nice! Congratulations!

I don't understand how it works, is there something that needs to be set up and then both parties are alerted by text message every day?
Adam Lack
@sydney_porter1 Thank you for your question. More information about how it works can be found on our website here: https://checkinbee.com/how-check...
