So excited to launch this โ€“ you can finally ditch Google Docs and replace it with an app you actually *want* to write in, instead of *have* to write in. But more importantly โ€“ below the surface, you will find that writing and editing with others becomes fruitful and collaborative instead of stressful and chaotic. Please check it out and let us know what you love and what you hate. We're committed to replacing the chaos from working in Word or Google Docs with something calm, focused, and fun. LFG!!

Love the branching and versioning features. ButterDocs has a beautiful and clean UI for writing (important!) but the concepts at the core are what are _really_ interesting for me: getting versioning and branching right is the key for working with documents that matter but also for documents where you want to wildly experiment with peace of mind. Kudos for launching ๐Ÿงˆ ButterDocs!
Michi Huber
@__tosh ๐Ÿ’ฏ We're all about clean UIs, but we're mostly interested in fundamentally fixing the document model: Instead of a one-dimensional paper, we introduce branches (different possibilities), snapshots (different versions over time), stashes (unplaced snippets of text), notes (research and ideas), etc. With all those dimensions, writing and collaborating becomes fundamentally simpler.

I've been able to try ButterDocs for a while now and it's the collaborative tool we've been looking for. At this stage we've completely dumped Google Docs and moved to ButterDoc as notes, focus mode and others are superior to GSuite (or is it called Google Business? Can't keep track). <3 ButterDocs!

@consti Thanks for all the feedback in our beta!!

We've been hyped for this day for months Product Hunters! Today marks ButterDocs launch to all writers, editors, and teams... and us putting Google Docs on notice. Producing great content has always been a major part of my strategy as a marketer. Especially content produced with customers, my team, partners, and subject matter experts. But, content collaboration is HARD work. Producing great briefs and outlines for my writers and partners. Gathering insights from experts and organizing research. Everyone having edits. Draft version control. Iโ€™ve always used Google Docs. And it has always given me headaches. It's in the little chaotic moments that really add up to hurt productivity. Clicking across dozens of browser tabs and windows to reference research. Writing happening in separate documents to avoid the peering eyes of editors and anonymous zoo animals. Comment and strikethrough overload as more people add their feedback. It get messy fast. What I love about ButterDocs is that it (and the team) tackle these chaotic issues I've experienced with Google Docs head on through innovation. It is writing software re-imagined completely for writers, editors, and content teams. If you do any sort of serious writing, it is worth checking out with a free account. We're offering Product Hunters 3 free documents and 70% off ButterDocs Pro (unlimited documents) at https://butterdocs.com/producthunt We'd love to learn from you... What slows you down most with writing and editing? What do you wish your writing environment could do?

Hey Michi, congratulations on the launch of ButterDocs! It's refreshing to see a new platform that caters to the needs of serious writers and teams. I'm curious, how does the outlining board enhance the writing process compared to traditional tools? Excited to see how this transforms collaborative writing!
Michi Huber
@alex_dulub That's a great question โ€“ adding the outlining board came from our initial users (we initially did not plan to add this initially). The main advantages: * Your outline stays connected to your doc, so if you want to move things around, those changes are reflected in your document * You're not switching between tabs but have the outline (and related notes) next to your doc while you write * You can tag your outline with your notes (with backlinks) and create an idea network that visually is reflected in your outline โ€“ makes this a great tool for thinking, before you start to write Please try it out and let us know what you think!
Lalitha
@michihuber OMG BACKLINKING TOO ?? YESS
Michi Huber
@lalitha_ar Yup, organize your ideas how it makes sense for *you*.
Micah Cratty
@alex_dulub @michihuber wanted to add to this with the collaboration aspect. You can get your team involved and aligned in the outlining/planning stage by commenting on the Blocks (our digital index cards that represent sections of your document), assigning Blocks to collaborators, and setting statuses like "Feedback Needed." Also, I don't think the value of having your outline and notes in view as you write can be underestimated.
Micah Cratty
@michihuber @lalitha_ar your notes will be so organized that you *will* know what to do with yourself.
Lalitha
I feel like this could become an ideal spot for brainstorming x writing without distractions - especially since I tend to go down a huge rabbit hole when it comes to researching lol Also a feature suggestion - Web clipper would be so much helpful if texts can be sent to the notes
Michi Huber
@lalitha_ar that's a great idea. we've been throwing ideas around internally on how to best quickly add to your notes, I'm sure we will come up with something soon.
Lalitha
@michihuber aw I am glad, btw incase you haven't looked at second brain system by Tiago forte / zettelkasten - please do so I believe it can give you loads of helpful ideas with taking inspiration from existing solutions :3
Michi Huber
@lalitha_ar Yes, big inspiration :)
Rob Carpenter
@lalitha_ar really good idea! Definitely add it to https://feedback.ButterDocs.com . Weโ€™re already talking about this internally, but there the user community can vote on it which definitely impacts our prioritization.
Lalitha
@robmcarpenter Hey I tried to make a suggestion so clicked on sign in ( I signed up through laptop and this is mobile ) but it just redirects me to account page - I am not sure if it's a glitch

Was using the Beta for a while now-- awesome tool! As many others have mentioned, the collaboration features and Git-like branching/merging flows are really well thought out and in that regard way ahead any other writing-app I've tried so far. I like to write "stream of thought"-style and edit afterwards-- BD enables this style (among others, I'd assume) in a very natural way by means of their powerful versioning/history management and allowing me to branch off into multiple directions. Definitely improved my writing output and keeping track of thoughts. Also love the command Palette and comprehensive range of keyboard-shortcuts. (Overall gives me the impression this caters well to power-users) Used the sharing/collaboration features only with one-off collaborators on single documents thus far (asking feedback etc), but will soon onboard my team after some due diligence on how their "Projects" enables me to organise our work and manage permissions. Looks promising so far. Desktop-App also a big plus for me as a chronic Tab-hoarder ๐Ÿ™ˆ

@flolaub The git branching an UX seems like the maindraw for me, otherwise, strut.so, Ulysses and other cover nearly the same feature set. That said 100 per year is a lot more of a pull.
Michi Huber
@flolaub @jack_o_regan_kenny Next to the git-style branching you also get real-time collab, like in Google Docs, though. Overall it's built for professional team workflows, hence the higher price-tag.
Jack O'Regan Kenny
@flolaub @michihuber By pull I meant the 100 per year is good value ๐Ÿ˜… Fully agree

ยกWhat a great find! An app that's truly designed for writers. I love the clean interface. @michihuber Do you have any professional writers on your team? It has features that seem born out of a writer's frustration, like the ability to set word goals or the stash.
Michi Huber
@duniachap yes, we have our very own "Head of Writing" @micahcratty We're also using it a lot internally. Letting you in on a secret, the app has also been developed for years in the shape of a screenwriting app โ€“ this is our next stage, aiming to replace Google Docs, but the design and UX has been battle-tested for years โ€“ one of our customers won 4 Emmys :)
Micah Cratty
@michihuber @duniachap we sure do! I'm a creative writer, and @robmcarpenter an ace content marketer (among other skills).
Yiliu Shen-Burke
ButterDocs is just so beautifully and thoughtfully designed with the needs of writers in mind. I love being able to see the diffs between different versions of a draft so clearly, and being able to easily choose the exact wording and sentences that convey what Iโ€™ve trying to communicate. Itโ€™s Incredibly familiar and powerful at the same time.
Micah Cratty
@yiliu_shen_burke strong version control is a low-key ๐Ÿ”ฅ feature.
Martin Schurrer
Been playing with this for a while now while it was still in alpha, and I must say I am super excited where this will go. It's a great writing experience, with powerful tooling, especially for use cases like e.g. the legal profession that goes through many revisions.
Micah Cratty
@msch glad to hear it! Love to hear more on how we can help solve problems for those use cases.
Rob Carpenter
@msch legal is definitely a segment we want to explore more! Branch and merge, draft management, change tracking by draft, etc are perfect for legal. Iโ€™ve seen some of them on contract management softwares but not all.
