Emails do work!

When I launched , quite a lot of users signed up and created accounts. But during launch there were lots of bugs and missing features, hence most users dropped off. I kept improving the product but didn't see the old signed up users coming back (very few did).
I thought of cold mailing the users for feedback, honestly didn't expect people to even open the mail, but surprisingly around 40-45% responded to the feedback mail! (for emails that's some crazy numbers I believe )
I found out that most people thought that the product won't have any more updates hence they never came back. After seeing the current product at old users started to use it again!

Thing is when a product goes quiet after a rough launch, most users don't think "I'll check back later." They think "that's probably done now."

Silence after a bad first impression doesn't feel neutral... it confirms the doubt they already had. Which means re-engagement emails aren't just outreach, they're actually correcting a story users told themselves🤷‍♀️

How did you get your initial users? My team and I are trying to bootstrap our way with our personal network and some small newspaper ad placements, but how did founders usually start lean?
