I have been working on CoreML for 4 years now (before at GoPro) and with the iPhone XS, we're getting to the point where you can see powerful ML inferences made on device for images. See here iPhone XS 5 times faster than iPhone X https://twitter.com/matthieuroui.... Network are small enough for apps now (CoreML and TensorFlow Light) and dedicated hardware, like the neural engine, makes inference fast enough. This is opening a lot of potential for AR like applications. My guess is that the iPhone XS will be minimum hardware to run AR for Apple Glasses. Also it really makes a difference to have inference results to be instant so I you have to upload or download a big result. On device is important for a first result. So anything with images will probably run on device at some point. It's also a lot better for privacy. I don't know for chat assistant but I bet future assistant will use a mix of voice/text and image so probably on device too. Also anything with video will run on device too
