Wow, that is a complicated implementation. For the user - such a small play button, but also for the devver. More JavaScript 🤔 Just make it an animated gif (with Google Motion Stills e.g.) and you are done.

Activating them is kind of confusing, especially if the photo itself doesn't have an easily distinguishable flow. I'd rather have it be on every roll over or a press on the photo than just rolling over the live button(?).

Also, I tried to implement it on my site, hipsterpixel.co, and sadly it beach balled Safari and crashed the Chrome tab... Maybe not fully ready? I'll open a Radar.
