The padlock that lied: what CoreWLAN's supportsSecurity really answers
...
Netfox
's Wi-Fi tool puts a padlock beside every network: green and closed when the traffic is encrypted, red and open when it isn't. Version 0.29.0 added a third case, Enhanced Open (OWE): a network you join without a password whose traffic is still encrypted. It deserves the green lock, and the join sheet tells you so. A day after shipping it, I filtered the list to "No password" and saw two networks with a green closed padlock ... ... name, was a neighbour's smart vacuum showing its setup hotspot. Its radio didn't even do 802.11n, and it was supposedly speaking a protocol from 2018. system_profiler SPAirPortDataType agreed with my suspicion: Security: None .

😴 Netfox 0.26.0 — a sleeping device keeps its ports
...
Netfox
0.26.0 is out This one is about telling the truth about ports A device asleep during the scheduled scan or Scan All no longer rewrites its ports: a silence keeps each port's last answer, with its time. No more risks vanishing while a laptop sleeps, and no more "port opened" alerts when it wakes up A device whose every port reads Filtered: a silence, not an answer One risk reading everywhere: the menu bar, the notch, the Overview ... ... Security now agree, and OK turns green only once every device

🔎 Netfox 0.23.0 — find the devices that never speak
...
Netfox
has always found devices by listening. This release lets it ask. Your network has things on it that never say a word. A printer asleep. A camera that only ever talks to its own cloud. A Pi you set up in March and forgot. They are powered on and perfectly reachable, and until now

🦊 Netfox 0.22.1 — the row that vanished when macOS 27 landed
... everyone Small release, but it's the kind I find interesting: nobody broke this one. It broke by itself, the day macOS 27 shipped.
Netfox
tells you which operating system a device runs by reading a number the device advertises about itself. That number was supposed to track one thing, and it turns out it tracks another the two just happened to agree for every release up to macOS 26. This year they stopped agreeing. So the table that turns ... ... precisely the broken state. One of them even asserted that the next macOS was unknown, so it would have passed by agreeing with the bug. There's now a check that asks the Mac it's running on whether

🦊 Netfox 0.21.0 — the question about file sharing nobody asks
... everyone
Netfox
0.21.0 is out, and it is mostly one feature plus a confession. Port 445 now tells you which version of file sharing a device actually speaks. File sharing is the port on your network most likely to be running something it shouldn't. So

🪟 Netfox 0.22.0 — tile it, and it becomes a widget
... everyone
Netfox
0.22.0 is out, and it is about one thing: the window finally behaves when you tile it. It used to refuse to go narrower than 960 points. So if you put it beside the thing you were actually working on, its right edge went off the screen. It was an app you opened, glanced at, and closed It now goes down to 500 340 and instead of squeezing the same layout into less room, it changes shape. Below ...

🔐 Netfox 0.19.1 — how a TLS port is talking, and each device's OS
... everyone Just shipped
Netfox
0.19.1 The certificate card now says how a port is talking, not just who it is. From the same handshake that reads the certificate, it shows the TLS protocol version and cipher a port negotiated and flags an obsolete version, or a key exchange with no forward secrecy. It's clear about the limit: one server's answer to a single negotiation, never the full set it supports. Each device's own OS. A device ... ... answers. The same read also gives Apple devices a steadier model than their advertised name. And a quiet fix to a latent race in the link panel. Free, universal, signed and notarized. macOS 15.6+. https://netfox.app Update via

📡 Netfox 0.17.0 — is my Wi-Fi the problem? Now it just tells you
... everyone Every Wi-Fi tool shows you numbers. Signal, noise, a channel number, maybe a chart. Then it leaves you there because the numbers were never the question. The question is is my Wi-Fi the problem?
Netfox
0.17.0 answers it in a sentence. The Wi-Fi tab: a plain-English verdict, the three numbers behind it, and every channel in the band Four answers, and two of them want opposite things The Wi-Fi looks fine the channel ... ... security measure. It isn't: the devices that already know the network announce its name while they look for it. You've made it harder for you to join and no harder for anyone else to find.

🦊 Netfox 0.14.0 — your Apple TV is an Apple TV
... everyone Just shipped
Netfox
0.14.0 , and this one started with a bug report I couldn't stop thinking about. I turned on my Apple TV and it wasn't in the list. Except it was sitting there as a phone , with no manufacturer, under the name I'd given it years ago. Here's why, and it's a nice little lesson in how device discovery actually works: An Apple TV announces the same services a Mac and a HomePod ... ... announce. Its name was "Living Room", which tells you nothing. So every clue
