What happened to your credit when you crossed a border?

by

Hi everyone, Berkley here, co-founder of Wiremi.

I'd love to hear from anyone who has moved countries, whether as a newcomer, a returning citizen, or part of the diaspora.

When I moved to Canada, the thing that surprised me most wasn't the cost of living or the weather. It was realizing my entire financial history didn't come with me. Years of paying on time, saving consistently, being trusted with money, all of it invisible the moment I crossed the border. I started from zero.

So I'm curious:

  • What happened to your credit or financial reputation when you moved?

  • What was the hardest thing you couldn't do because of it? Renting, a phone plan, a loan, a card?

  • If you come from a culture with rotating savings groups (njangi, ajo, susu, tanda, hui, paluwagan), did the system here recognize any of that as financial history? I'm guessing not.

We're building Wiremi to fix exactly this: turning the financial behavior the system ignores into a credit identity that travels with you. But I'd genuinely rather hear your stories first. What did the border cost you?
