So much hate! I know $10K doesn't sound like a ton given today's big city tech salaries, but for someone who is in a financial bind (debt, health expenses, etc.) or someone who wants to save a ton of money over a year or two with a simultaneous cost of living reduction + a cash bump, this could be a great opportunity or a big relief. Also, there's a sense of warmth and welcoming and in smaller tech communities that is nowhere to be found in larger cities these days, and that appeals to some people who don't want to be yet another California tech douche (guilty as charged) but don't want to live in the sticks either. As someone now in their 30s who is starting to care far more about how close I live to the nearest dog park than how big and hip and cosmopolitan a city is -- shit, old age is making me a bit of a recluse - I could personally definitely see myself being into this kind of thing if I weren't so annoyed by cold weather.

For non-income tax state residents, you pay the $10k back over 1-2 years in income taxes.
