Hi Product Hunt! π
I'm Eduardo, co-creator of Seagull. My wife and I speak different native languages, and sometimes the things we want to watch together simply don't have proper translations or subtitles.
When consuming content in another language, most people rely on subtitles, which require a human to create, or real-time auto-captions, which are⦠well, famously terrible.
Seagull started from a simple question: what if any audio on your computer could be translated in real-time?
So we set out to build the smartest real-time caption system on the market. That's Seagull!
Come say hello on our Discord (where we also talk about future updates and product development), we'd love to hear from you: https://discord.gg/H4hXRf8jmg

@wardoatelierΒ I was number 48 to join the Discord, how do you get the free plan?
It works for all audio input, and it also overlays on top of games and fullscreen video.
Let me know if you want to try it out, and I'll send you a monthly gift code. π¦

Congrats on the launch! I'm curious how do you capture audio on Mac, Windows, and Linux? Is it the same lib that supports all of them or different for each OS?
We deliberately chose a stack that was fast to iterate on and could give us multi-platform support fast, so we're using one library for everything, and that's electron-audio-loopback.

This is awesome! π₯It would be great for watching films that don't have subtitles in a native language by default. Working across different systems is just great system design as well. XD Congrats on the launch π
@agraciagΒ We've not implemented anything like that as of now, but we have that on our roadmap for this week's release!
Especially for slang and dialects, it might be hard for the translation system to pick everything up right away. We will add human training.

@wardoatelierΒ Thanks for your response, good luck and I will be paying attention to anything you would like to share about your experience with human training, it is going to be a challenge!

Love that this was born from a real personal need. The bilingual household use case really resonates β my partner and I deal with this exact problem watching shows together. The fact that it works as a system-level overlay across all apps is what sets it apart from the clunky subtitle tools out there.

@letian_wang3Β Hi Letian! Thanks for the comment! Yes, the idea of Seagull comes from our own experience, and we have been using it ourselves before the launch. We will also launch the conversation mode very soon, so the in-person conversation across languages will be easy too!
Real-world adoption lives or dies on audio capture and overlay UX: whatβs the hardest environment you optimized for (full-screen video, games, Discord/Zoom, multi-monitor, etc.), and what product choices did you make to keep it βzero setupβ across Mac/Windows/Linux?

This solves a real pain point. I work on a multilingual platform and the number of times I've wished for exactly this while watching content in other languages is countless. Does it work well with overlapping speakers or fast-paced dialogue?

This is very cool. Is Swedish supported?
Seagull
@jenny_karlsson1Β Hi Jenny, yes, we support Swedish!
Hello Eduardo,
did you implement any kind of human feedback? Like if the user would correct something and your system learn about it?
