I seem to remember them from years ago. Sure looks like the product and freemium/pay value ratio have both matured. Anyone else remember them? Or am I confused?
Such a key tool for so many. I can't wait to try it out.

@jimcanto yes they've been around for awhile. Glad it was product hunted!

@jimcanto Yup, these guys have been around for quite some time.

@jimcanto yes, I have been using them for years as well. Product has matured. Can't believe it was never hunted.

Really easy-to-use screencast app. Great that you can save your video locally on your computer. There is a free and a paid version. But the free is suitable for most purposes.

Besides the price, how is this different from Screenflow for Mac?

@arasheedphoto screenflow has more advanced features when it comes to edit and file export. Screencast-o-matic is more simple and perhaps easier to use for some.
Nice tool over all but Jing by TechSmith offers superior recording quality and it's also free. Jing's final capture has minimal discoloration and compression artifacts while this tool creates an output that's noticeable more compressed (like an over-compressed JPEG instead of a crisp PNG). Also, I couldn't launch the Screencast-O-Matic Mac app without going through the website (even though I see it installed in my Mac's Launchpad).
How does it compare to Snagit? Hey, I got to ask :-)

@lynnfredricks I have not tried it yet....but I was a Jing guy back in the day. Still have it on the computer I'm writing from right now. I have not moved to SnagIt. But great question.

I used to use SnapzPro in the early 2000s. How would you say it compares? I have not found a replacement for Snapz. Skitch is great for still shots but Captivate is bloated for screencasting & capture.
