Safety Wing - Global health insurance for digital nomads

Our first product is a travel medical insurance made for digital nomads. It's $37 / month. (4 weeks) for worldwide coverage ($30 add-on for US, since US healthcare is much more expensive.) Only works when you’re outside your home-country (although there is 30 days home country coverage every 3 months so you can visit home, 15 for U.S. residents). Covers hospital, doctor, prescription, etc.

The subscription product works really easy and the support it's quick in replying. But the problem starts when you want to claim back your money for insured cases. The real insurance company is Tokio Marine HCC. I created a claim on 18 July and it was processed on 11 of September (without notifying me). My claim is marked as the patient's responsibility when the cost is only $40. I'm really disappointed and glad that I discovered this with simple case. With previous insurance for similar cases response arrived in around a week and in a round of two weeks they were returning money to my card.

Safety Wing is great. Their insurance partner, Tokio Marine, is awful. Gross incompetence, untimely processing of requests (almost 4 months!), inability to provide consistent directions for the claims process. Don't recommend Safetywing

Insane to see so many fake recent reviews. This company is a marketing company, not an insurance company. Their only job is to sell insurance plans of a company that's not innovative, and doesn't understand what to be a digital nomad is. Making a claim is a nightmare, as many of the comments here say. It's a very long PDF form that asks you for many details that as a nomad you don't have (for example: Your "doctor" who knows you and has "your file"). You have to pay everything out of pocket, and then figure out how to be reimbursed. It's just insane, don't buy this trash.

@deilur Its not an Insurance compamny it's a MAFIA - they only want to collect money from all of us but never ever pay it out!!

SafetyWing has asked me to leave a paid review. What can I say - their quirky bird branding and initial user experience for sign up is pleasant enough. Their chat function is helpful. Cons: If you are after insurance that actually insures you, this isn't it. I have been (for some reason) paying them for several years and they have yet to approve any of my claims. The claim process is clunky (as its through a third party), they don't tell you when and why your claims are declined, and they make every effort to not cover much of anything. If you are after a low price option that will maybe pitch in if your accident or illness meets their very specific guidelines.. maybe it's for you. Better than nothing? If anyone here has recommendations on a company that actually works.. I am in the market!

@bailey_g same experience here. deny every claim without even explaining the reason

is this for solo travelers only? Any way to add family members?

@jaybroni We are adding a way to add extra travellers over the coming two weeks, actually. Today each individual who buys it have to register themselves.

I don’t need this, but I almost did a year-long nomad stint and couldn’t find a good solution to this problem. Looks awesome!

A much needed product. A few years ago, I was nomadic and traveling for several months. A friend of mine did *not* have travel insurance and broke her leg at an elephant sanctuary in Chang Mai. If only this existed back then... Congrats team Safety Wing!

@lynne_tye Of all places to break a leg! Thank you Lynne :)

This is SUCH an awesome idea and I absolutely love it, but what's up with the Disney design? Nomads are young professionals, I don't see how this style is appealing to them. I also don't understand why the terms are not put upfront. We all know that insurance contracts are full of loopholes, transparency helps building trust.

Obviously they need to use a big insurance company to handle the claims. They picked one that doesn't pay claims. Also takes premiums a week early to stop people cancelling. It's a scam site.Only use if you are under 30 + required to show proof of insurance.Good luck if you have to make a claim.

The covid19 coverage is a scam. Don't think you're gonna be reimbursed if you have a health issue abroad due to covid19. It's not written on their website, but they ask so many proof you had covid (a PCR is not enough), that it's impossible to be covered. For example I am not covered because they ask me to prove that I had covid19 before I did the PCR test... But the PCR test is my proof! Ok the UX of their website is amazing. But when you really wanna be covered you are redirected to The worst insurance ever... WorldTrip
