Sablefold - Private photo vault with on-device OCR and safer sharing

by
Sablefold is a private photo and video vault for iPhone. It encrypts selected media on-device, searches visible text in photos and Live Photo stills with local OCR, and creates safer JPEG copies with known metadata removal, redactions, and purpose watermarks.

Hi Product Hunt — I’m Chris, the independent developer behind Sablefold. I built Sablefold around a simple tension: private media still needs to be useful. You may want to protect a receipt, family photo, document, or sensitive screenshot, but you still need to find it later—and sometimes share it carefully. Sablefold focuses on three local-first workflows: 🔒 Local encryption — selected photos, Live Photos, and videos are stored as encrypted copies on your iPhone. 🔎 On-device OCR — search visible text in photos and Live Photo stills without sending your library to a developer cloud. Standalone videos are not indexed. ↗ Safe Share — create a new JPEG, remove known metadata, add opaque redactions and a purpose watermark, then review the final copy before sharing. There is no Sablefold account or developer cloud. The free plan supports up to 30 items per collection, while Lifetime Pro is a one-time purchase rather than a subscription. One important boundary: Safe Share reduces exposed information, but it cannot control what a recipient does with a shared copy. I’d especially value your feedback: 1. Which of these three workflows is most useful to you? 2. What would make you trust a private media vault on your phone?
