Some things are worth more than the gist

Most of what any of us read deserves to be skimmed. Entertainment, reference, the thing you needed one number from. Nobody should feel guilty about that, and there is no argument here that every article deserves an hour.

But some things are chosen differently. You save them because they might change a decision, a piece of writing, a lesson you have to teach, or the way you see something. Saving is a quiet declaration that this may matter later.

Later usually arrives without the context that made it matter. The file survives. The reason does not. You reopen it six weeks on and find a passage you underlined with no memory of why, and the honest thing to admit is that you are starting again.

That gap is what we are working on. Not making things shorter so they can be got through faster, but making chosen things stay structured, connected, and worth returning to. Understanding built once and still usable when it is needed.

We do not think we are the only possible answer to this, and we would rather more people worked on it than fewer.

If it interests you: take one thing you saved because it mattered, and see whether you can still recover why. That question is the whole problem, and most people find the answer uncomfortable.

The longer version of this argument is .
