@janette_arsenault That's exactly the problem I kept running into too. After a while, names like "image #5849" don't tell you anything useful.
My approach is to organize them by context or category as early as possible, because once you have thousands of similarly named photos, finding the right one becomes a treasure hunt
Desktop honestly !! I have a folder called stuff … I don’t think I can open that today :)

Photos! I have so many photos that are all named something like "image #5849". How do you organize them?

I believe the desktop files and browser, terminal, folder & settings everything is kinda messed up. Work is scattered everywhere. I work on many projects so I built a spotlight to arrange all into a workspace.
@abhayraghuwanshi I relate to this a lot. Once you're juggling multiple projects, the mess isn't just files anymore—it's tabs, folders, downloads, screenshots, notes, and settings spread everywhere.
A workspace-focused approach sounds really interesting. The challenge is making organization happen without adding more work for the user.

@tony2742I built a desktop app to manually organize all my projects. Automated organization is costly and could be managed with an LLM but figuring out which files to arrange is tricky and can’t be done with just a prompt and instructions. I’m currently working on creating a good agent to handle the auto-creation process t works okay but still needs more effort. https://cool-desk.com.

my downloads folder has 47 invoices from last year named "invoice" "invoice (1)" "invoice (2)" all the way through "invoice (47)." i have accepted it. this is who i am now.

Definitely Downloads. Every file goes there with the intention of organizing it "later"... and later never comes. It's basically a graveyard of screenshots, PDFs, ZIP files, and installers.

same Downloads, every temporarely downloads files(zip, application, image) all in one folder, no organize, no rename, just put here, and someday delete these all

My 'vibe coding' folder, literally a bunch of screenshots and zip files all over the place.

Downloads - actually the only folder I use on my laptop, since everything is more or less in the cloud now. Every now and then I create more folders in Downloads to "organize" 😅
