What are the BEST and WORST lead gen tools you have tried?
by•
While building Jesse, I talked with a ton of founders, builders and asked about their experience with the best and worst lead gen tools they have used.
I am curious to know the opinion of this group on this matter.
Some common ones that many use today are:
> Apollo
> Clay
> Lusha
> Zoominfo
Feel free to name and mention any other tools that you have come across.

Honestly, after testing a bunch of these (Apollo, Clay, ZoomInfo, Lusha, etc.), I’m starting to think the “best lead gen tool” debate misses the real bottleneck.
Most teams don’t lose deals because of bad data, they lose them because of slow follow-up.
A fresh lead from any of these platforms is basically a race condition. If you don’t engage within minutes, intent drops off fast and conversion tanks. At that point, whether the lead came from Apollo or ZoomInfo barely matters.
We saw more lift by fixing speed-to-lead than by switching data providers 3 times.
That’s actually why we built something like Dialbotix not to “replace” lead gen tools, but to remove the delay after them. Instead of leads sitting in a CRM waiting for a rep to call tomorrow, they get an immediate AI voice call, qualification, and booking attempt in real time.
So yeah, tool choice matters at the margin. But execution speed is usually the real constraint.
Curious if others have seen the same, did switching tools actually move the needle, or was it more about follow-up speed + process?

@moeez1 Don’t people perceive unsolicited AI calls as obstructive? Or is the quality so good people can’t tell?
@sudipta_biswas4 Fair question.
From what we’ve seen, people don’t really react to “AI vs human”, they react to whether the call is relevant and well-timed.
And yes, if someone asks, it’s always disclosed honestly.
Great topic. I'm stealing recommendations from this thread 😄
Jesse
@joshua_kelly3 glad this is helpful
@sudipta_biswas4 Which one has given you the best reply rate, not just the most leads?
Jesse
@casper_voigt honestly, i couldn’t get much from any of the above. Clay probably did the best in the lot.
Not trying to plug in, but our product Jesse does the best.
Clay feels powerful, but it definitely made me watch a few tutorial first.
Jesse
@juhan_polinert That’s true. You need to wire together multiple data sources to get the best out of it
Still early in my lead-gen journey as a solo founder, but Apollo has been the most useful tool I've tried so far.
Honestly, I'm finding that identifying the right people is easier than getting genuine responses. 😅
Interested to see what tools others are having success with, especially fellow bootstrapped founders.
Jesse
@harithavijayakumar What are the challenges you faced in getting responses?

I'm currently using phantombuster, gojiberry & Clay.
Well I mean... I'll always be kinda biased towards Datacrecy ;)
Omnify, Inc
I feel Clay is great but gets very expensive for startups. I haven't tried other tools.
Apollo for reach, though the data ages quickly.
Jesse
@ritesh2503 Have heard similar experiences from many others
