Should the European Union control chat communication? [Chat Control Law]

Very quick summary:

The EU’s proposed Chat Control Law would scan all private communications for child abuse material, but critics warn it undermines privacy, weakens encryption, risks mass surveillance, and could expand to policing political dissent.

I don’t want to sound conspiratorial or anything like that, but it somewhat reminds me of the surveillance practices before 1989 in Europe, leading up to the Velvet Revolution, when people were reporting on each other to protect political interests. (Especially in the Eastern Bloc and some parts of Central Europe, this memory is still very vivid.)

What's your opinion on controlling communication in such a way?
