Is switching from GPT/Claude APIs to hosted Llama actually cheaper for solo devs?

As a solo developer, my API costs for proprietary models are starting to climb quickly. For anyone running open-source models like Llama or Mistral on cloud compute, did you actually save money long-term, or did server maintenance and lower quality end up costing more?

I’d probably stick with APIs until usage becomes predictable. Managing servers, scaling, and model updates sounds like another job for a solo devloper
I run a mix, and it depends on the job. On my crowdsourcing site, profile writing goes to Gemini Flash because it's cheap, and job post summaries run on Qwen locally, so that part's free. The local model sits on an M1 MacBook Pro at my office with Ollama, so there's no cloud server to look after.
Before moving the summaries over, I kept checking them until I was sure the quality held up. For coding and anything tricky, I still pay for the big models.
