Is it stupid to buy a domain before getting actual user interest?

Always see people buying .com names and making logos before even building the actual tool.
I used to think you need the whole setup ready to look legit, but buying tech stuff early feels like a waste if the idea flops.
How long do you run on free subdomains or cheap placeholders before dropping money on official branding?

Absolutely not - the domain is as much part of the identity as the app itself, its part of the brand. Modern browsers do a lot to hide the complexities in the URL, e.g. the path, or query. Open Safari on Mac now, and all you get in address bar is the TLD.
Hunt for a domain early, they are cheap these days, unless you happen to fall foul of someone who's parked a domain for the purpose of selling. They're also a good sense-check to make sure your brand name is unique
